After double penetration, it'll probably involve number two. #watercoolerfodder

That's the other unfortunate part of the play, the cheap shot was rewarded by injuring McGahee AND rewarded in the context of the game as a turnover.

Helmets and definitely shoulder pads are not exactly unforgiving and have had significant improvements even in the past 5 years to limit head and neck injuries. They absorb the impacts far better than previous equipment. Case in point: the earlier hit by Sweed on whatever Raven. Vicious, but both came out fine.
I'd agree you're correct in the point of the culprit being safeties' poor form. If he was trying to tackle instead of hit, he'd have his arms out to wrap up, and more of his body would've absorbed the blow, and would've concentrated it on a larger portion of McGahee's body.

But they'll never play without pads and I wouldn't expect them to, so it's a bit of a Catch-22.

From the NFL rulebook, a helmet to helmet hit is illegal when: "A tackler uses his helmet to butt, spear, or ram an opponent."
We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, but I don't think there is any way you can say that Clark speared McGahee when he lead with his shoulder.

did Simms at one point that say helmet to helmet contact is allowed if it's down the field?
has any team EVER been dirtier than this year's Steelers? can we get a montage of their dirty/questionable hits from this season? I know it would be long, but worth the effort.

at least Rodney never went helmet-to-helmet. just late.
from the AP: McGahee caught a pass and took two steps before Clark stopped him with a helmet-to-helmet hit. McGahee's neck snapped back and he immediately dropped to the ground.
saying that wasn't helmet-to-helmet is like saying "don't tell me the federal response to Katrina was slow!"

supervision showed the first thing to hit was the helmet.

It could have just as easily been called shoulder pad-to-shoulder pad.

one helmet on the other. helmet-on-helmet, if you will.
