Frustrations are coming to a boil in the investigation of the Nov. 27 slaying of Sean Taylor, which in its immediate wake seemed, and was presented by authorities, to be an open-and-shut case. Now, as Fanhouse notes, a judge has threatened jail time to one of the case's lead detectives if the report is not presented to defense attorneys by April 28.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy warned prosecutors Friday that he would jail a county homicide detective if he didn't finish his report on the death of NFL star Sean Taylor.

Murphy gave Detective Juan Segovia until April 28 to finish his report so prosecutors can turn it over to the attorneys representing the four men accused of killing Taylor.

A police spokesman said the delay is due to the complexity of the case and the workload involved, which strikes an odd note considering that as early as the first week of December, police were claiming that they had confessions from at least one of the four suspects.

A detective getting time in a case with a national profile could deal an especially embarrassing blow to Miami-Dade police and especially infuriating to his Taylor's police chief father, to say nothing of the rest of the family.

<![CDATA[ Braylon Edwards Honors Sean Taylor His Own Way ]]> Today the NFL season officially ends with the annual Pro Bowl game in Honolulu. Its a day filled with Gonzo Friday-esque wardrobes, leis, coconuts, and, in this year's, hearfelt Sean Taylor tributes. Redskins reps Chris Cooley, Ethan Albright, and Chris Samuels will all be wearing Taylor's number 21 during today's game. Replacing Taylor at safety is the Dallas Cowboys Ken Hamlin, who when asked if he would also pay tribute to Taylor, told the Honolulu Advertiser, "We'll see."

So, probably not. Dick.

Also, yesterday, Busted Coverage unveiled these probably inappropriate by NFl code of conduct policy-standard photos of Browns' wideout Braylon Edwards, gearing up for the game by blasting assault rifles.

<![CDATA[ Our Last Ever Mention Of The Schrutebag ]]> cowherd.jpgWe're not sure why we bother anymore, but anyway: Here's today's idiotic rant from ESPN Schrutebag Colin Cowherd on the death of Sean Taylor.

Sean Taylor, great player has a history of really really bad judgment, really really bad judgment. Cops, assault, spitting, DUI. I'm supposed to believe his judgment got significantly better in two years, from horrible to fantastic? 'But Colin he cleaned up his act.' Well yeah, just because you clean the rug doesn't mean you got everything out. Sometimes you've got stains, stuff so deep it never ever leaves.

No, all the information's not in. But I feel pretty confident that my gut feeling, like any of yours, by the way, is right and was right.

DC Sports Bog does an amazing job taking Cowherd apart, and we can't recommend reading him enough. And we promise, now, there will be no more mentions of Colin Cowherd on Deadspin again. Promise. We don't want to make the guy more famous, as the saying goes.

<![CDATA[ The Final Word On Sean Taylor (For Now) ]]> davidaldridgeleft2.jpgWe've always enjoyed David Aldridge; he seems like one of those guys who found his true self once he left ESPN. We appreciate that he keeps the sports for what they are, and knows who he is: He's an information guy, and he's one of the best. But he knows when to step out and make his voice heard when the time comes, and the time has come.

Aldridge's take today on the Sean Taylor story is the best we've seen yet.

Sean Taylor, while no saint, was not a "thug." He didn't grow up in the 'hood. He went to private schools before college. And even if he was a thug - whatever that is - or embraced that culture during one part of his life, that doesn't mean he deserved to die in front of his child and fiancée, in his home, bothering no one.

I'm angry that people cry about Sean Taylor's death because he was an outstanding football player, as if his death has extra meaning because he had great closing speed. This is not about sports. We have buried 200 Sean Taylors in this city this year. We don't know what would have come of their dreams and hopes. They deserve our tears, too, for they may have been anonymous to you, but they weren't to their mothers and fathers, their best friends and lovers, their teachers and mentors.

That David Aldridge is a less ubiquitous presence on our airwaves than Stephen A. Smith is as fierce an indictment of our sports media world as we can imagine.

<![CDATA[ Antrel Rolle Thinks He Knows What Happened To Sean Taylor ]]> antrelrolle.jpgWe still don't think Michael Wilbon's chat comments were in particularly good taste — and who's more experts on good taste than us? — but he's not the only one questioning whether the death of Sean Taylor was just some random break-in. Cardinals cornerback Antrel Rolle, who also went to the U and knew Taylor, is mincing no words.

Rolle makes it clear, without having any specific inside knowledge, that he doesn't think this was random at all.

He really didn't say too much," Rolle said, "but I know he lived his life pretty much scared every day of his life when he was down in Miami because those people were targeting him. At least, he's got peace now."

"They say it was a burglary. It absolutely was not a burglary," he said. "Down South, where we're from, there were many people talking to Sean, a lot of jealousy, a lot of angry people."

We're not sure this was the kind of peace Sean was looking for, Antrel, but thanks for your input. We're gonna know a heckuva lot more in a week than we do now.

<![CDATA[ Here's Sean Taylor's Past, Relevant Or No ]]> taylorremembered.jpgMichael Wilbon appears to have backed down from some of his ridiculous, offensive chat comments yesterday, but the fact remains: The way many media outlets dealt with the death of Sean Taylor yesterday was questionable, to say the least.

That is to say: When his death appears — for now, anyway — to have nothing to do with any of his off-field troubles, why does everyone feel compelled to keep bringing them up, as if this was somehow an inevitable result?

Why, when a man is on what turns out to be his death-bed, is it necessary to highlight negativities in his life? Without knowing all of the facts surrounding his death, mentioning those moments of indiscretion in an effort to cast a shadow on a dying man's character is completely without class.

Perhaps it will turn out that Taylor's off-field troubles led to this ... but it's unlikely, and there's certainly no evidence to suggest that so far. Other than the fact that he kept a machete next to his bed, that is. When one dies at 24, we suppose it's difficult to find items to fill up an obit, whether they're relevant to the situation at night. Yet another layer to the whole tragedy.

<![CDATA[ R.I.P. Sean Taylor ]]>
After struggling all day yesterday, Redskins safety Sean Taylor died this morning from his wounds after a shooting in his home Monday.

Taylor "did not make it through the night;" his femoral artery had been severed, and the bleeding "could not be stopped, just curbed." Michael Wilbon wrote yesterday that, "Taylor grew up in a violent world, embraced it, claimed it, loved to run in it and refused to divorce himself from it. He ain't the first and won't be the last." Taylor was shot after leaving the bed of his fiancee with his 18-month-old daughter just down the hall.

Taylor was 24 years old.

<![CDATA[ Sean Taylor Shot In His Miami Home; "Fighting For His Life" ]]> seantaylor.jpgA very serious, scary situation developing in Florida this morning: Redskins safety Sean Taylor has been shot.

Pro Football Talk says Taylor is fighting for his life; they say he was shot when someone tried to burglarize his home. The Redskins have released a statement as well:

The Washington Redskins became aware of a situation this morning in which safety Sean Taylor was the victim of a shooting at his residence in Florida. The Miami Dade Police Department is currently investigating the situation. Taylor is currently undergoing treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida.

More as it develops, obviously. Good thoughts toward Mr. Taylor, if you could.

(SECOND UPDATE: The Washington Post is giving updates on Taylor all day; it looks like Taylor is in a coma. Heavens.)

<![CDATA[ Sean Taylor Free To Visit All Kinds Of DJs Now ]]> seantaylormugshot.jpgOne of our favorite, quietly sublime stories of the last couple months involved Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor and his battle with a prosecutor who worked as a DJ in his spare time. (His MySpace page included the immortal self-description as a bulging-biceps, headphones-wearing prosecutor looking for "brains and an ass" from a potential mate; he eventually resigned from the case.) Anyway, it appears Taylor is off the hook, pleading out to two misdemeanor charges that will require no jail time.

Taylor, whose violent style of play is already legendary, should be back and fine to play next year, which is much more a comfort to Redskins fans than it is to lithe NFC East wide receivers and potential pilferers of all-terrain vehicles. Or fellow football players averse to saliva in their face.

<![CDATA[ You Be The DJ, He'll Be The Prosecutor ]]> djsexshirt.jpgWe don't have a MySpace page, mainly because we think we have enough of an Internet presence, thank you very much. We sometimes think it's a shame, though, because it seems like everytime we see a MySpace page, the person with the page appears to be having more sex than we are. Or maybe, we dunno, people's online lives are different than their real ones. It's possible.

Anyway, much hollering and yelling this morning about the MySpace page of the now-ex-prosecutor in the case of Redskins safety Sean Taylor, who is accused of "brandishing" a weapon at three guys who might or might not have stolen some SUVs ATVs off his property. The prosecutor, Michael Grieco, is a DJ in his spare time, and defense attorneys accused him of using the case for self-promotion. His resignation has caused the case to be delayed yet again.

Grieco has taken down his MySpace page, but since this is the Web, you can still find it right here. Looking over the page — from which the above photo is swiped — it's just another dopey MySpace page with a bunch of semi-attractive women tell Grieco how awesome his DJing skills are. Our favorite section appears to be written by a stripper:

Um, excuse me, hi Mr. DJ (insert batting eyelashes here) so this is my Tues and sometimes Friday pole song. I expect you to play this next time I'm at Slims (preferably Tues AND Fri) - oh and did I mention how sexy you are and how great and BIG your biceps look in your perfectly sized, ironic phrased t-shirt? If you refuse, I'll continue to make this pouty sad face :( The answer's still no? Damn you DJ ESQ. Cocky bastard ruining my only chance to realize my fantasy of being a stripper without the wherewithal to actually get paid for it. Curses!

You know, if "Law & Order" ever decided to have a replacement for Sam Waterson's McCoy, we think a bulging-biceps, headphones-wearing prosecutor who is looking for "brains and an ass" from a potential mate would work out excellently.

<![CDATA[ Sean Taylor Needs To Practice His Spitting ]]> spitspit.jpgIf you watched last weekend's Redskins-Buccaneers game, you saw Washington safety Sean Taylor ejected for spitting on Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman, and you know when you spit on a Marine who has been known to drive his Hummer into vehicles that contain his wife and child, there will be ramifications. Even if the ESPN Sunday Night crew portrayed Taylor as a victim in the whole matter.

Well, video of the expectoration has arisen online, and well, we have some issues with Taylor's spitting technique; he ends up with an infant-esque pool of dribble that just kind of falls out of his mouth, limply. If you're doing to spit in somebody else's face, it's all about the arc. Parabolas. Torque. Talk to Roberto Alomar if you need to, Sean.
