Slovakia beat Italy in overtime in their first match of the IIHF World Championship in Germany yesterday. They were promptly treated to a celebratory edition of the Slovenian national anthem, “Zdravljica,” rather than their own, “Nad Tatrou Sa Blýska.” Slovakian fans did their best to drown it out:
Last week, MFK Kosice beat Slovan Bratislava in the final round of the Slovak Super Liga's top knockout competition. After the match, one fan decided to go for a run on the pitch. An opposing supporter took offense, chasing him down and knocking him out with one blow.
Slovakian goalie Jan Laco stuck it all out during today's men's hockey match against Russia, trying to sneak a hit on Alexei Tereshchenko as he skated behind the net. Laco's butt-move earned him a two-minute minor for interference, served by teammate Tomas Tatar.
Team USA destroyed Slovakia 7-1 this morning in its opening game in Sochi, doing the most damage in the second period. John Carlson started off the scoring at 14:27 in the first period and then the Americans unloaded for six goals in the second.
Nike continues to roll out the Olympic hockey sweaters. (The Americans'? They're OK. Could do without the shoulder stars. And the phantom ties, though those are universal. At least they're not Nazi-inspired.) The Slovak jerseys were unveiled today, and they're pretty crisp. But there's one subtle, wonderful feature…
The junior ice hockey world championships are currently underway in Russia, and these kids are not messing around. The video above comes from today's contest between Canada and Slovakia, and features Canadian Anthony Camara absolutely demolishing Slovakia's Patrik Luza with a vicious forecheck.
Puck Daddy has the story and the complete video, but these few moments tell us all we need to know about a Slovakian rink's roof giving way under the weight of snow. Though native Richard Zednik was putting on a youth clinic, he and the kids got off the ice with seconds to spare, and no one was injured.

Here we go, Day 5. The unfortunately (and accurately?) named All Whites take on the mighty Fightin' Jondas of Slovakia. Who to root for? Hostel was set in Slovakia. That is all.
