Eight-year-old Pirates fan Dominic (sp?) held up a sign during last night’s Pirates game, in an attempt to get Starling Marte to give him a baseball for his birthday. Marte threw a ball in his direction, but another child grabbed it, which made little Dom sad. Poor Dom.
With two outs in the ninth in a tie ball game, Starling Marte tripled off the right field wall, and came home on a throwing error on the relay. He was called out at the plate. A year ago, this game would have gone to extra innings. But thanks to replay review, the Pirates got to enjoy some delayed gratification.
Starling Marte went on the DL last week with a hand injury. The Pirates, a game back in the division ahead of a big weekend series with St. Louis, could really use the speedy outfielder back in the lineup.
So if this is what being emotionally invested in a pennant race is like, I'm not sure I'm going to make it to Labor Day.
