Also, best live shows I've seen somewhat recently: TV on the Radio, Broken Social Scene, Grizzly Bear, and Andrew Bird.
And on that note it's past my bedtime, goodnight folks. I'll be checking out some of these albums I'm not already familiar with during work tomorrow. Cheers.
@spinachdip: The Green Alum was probably one of the first 15 CDs I've ever bought, and that being said, I CAN'T STAND Weezer now. Pork and Beans is the most idiotic drivel I've ever heard.
I'll throw out a couple of albums from this year that were pretty good and I haven't seen mentioned, though the stuff everyone has mentioned here is exceptional
Ghostland Observatory- Robotique Majestique
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin- Pershing
Wolf Parade- At Mount Zoomer
Death Cab for Cutie- Narrow Stairs
Cold War Kids- Loyalty to Loyalty
Houses and Homes- Bye Bye Blackbirds
and, in terms of single songs, Viva La Vida by Coldplay and Mother Mary by Foxboro Hot Tubs were pretty good.
@DougOLis: I like your style, sir. Particularly Fleet Foxes, Department of Eagles, Nick Cave, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Okkervil River. I believe this list includes 60 percent of what I listen to on Grooveshark all day at work.
Radiohead- In Rainbows (bit of a stretch considering it came out in 2007 but was "officially" released in 2008)
The Killers- Day & Age (like I said before, I know I'll probably get a lot of crap for this one, but there's not a bad song on the album. Maybe I'm just more inclined to like it after how bad "Sam's Town" was)
@Scott Mitchell Revival Effort: damn solid list but I'm not sure if In Rainbows counts. I'd put it up there too but it was on my '07 list so that'd be kind of weird. Actually, come to think of it, Oracular Spectacular was on it too but quite a bit lower than it is now.
I don't really mind The Killers; besides I know a guy who plays for them on tour.
@Return_of_ClintonPortishead: ahh, yes, I agree. I'm not sure if it's #1 for me but it's definitely in my top 5. Oddly enough, that's what I'm listening to right now
@DougOLis: One of the easiest things you can do, but impresses girls for some reason, is cracking an egg with one hand. It's all about the presentation.
@DougOLis: Oh, I realized I responded to a post from like 7 hours ago. You'd mentioned something about impressing ladies with wine vs cooking. Refresh FAIL.
As long as some of us are on the music kick, who is everyone's selection for band with a great debut album whose further efforts were continuous disappointments? I'm going with Bloc Party. Silent Alarm was/is a hell of a CD, but everything since then has been crap.
@Return_of_ClintonPortishead: How can you discount the masterpiece that is A Weekend in the City? That album is damn near perfect from beginning to end.
Also, something tells me that every Band of Horses album from now is going to be disappointing.
@TheDerridaDrop: Really? I was EXTREMELY disappointed with a Weekend in the City - I thought they traded a unique, driving sound for bottled Euro synth crap. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed by an album than that one. Also I am a big Band of Horses fan, Everything All the Time was spectacular and I thoroughly enjoyed Cease to Begin as well, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it go down from here.
@Return_of_ClintonPortishead: I suppose it makes sense that I didn't hear Silent Alarm until after WITC. And yeah, they do reign it in quite a bit on that album, but I think the mood the album creates is pretty cool (especially if you buy in to the theory that it's a response to the London bus bombings). Also, "Hunting for Witches" must be in the running for their best song.
As an aside, I'm on a plane to Vegas in the morning, and as I'm packing, I find out it's been FUCKING SNOWING IN LAS FUCKING VEGAS! What in the hell is that?
@OchentaYcinco: I broke my Vegas cherry two years ago, and it snowed while I was there. It was 50 degrees at the time. I have no fucking clue how this happened. 30 minutes later, it was over.
Rondo, I'm sorry I was skeptical(very doubtful) of you previously. You've made me look like an idiot; it appears you can indeed play point guard and won't be another of Danny's failed guard projects.
Ok, don't know if any of you watch the hills, but the whole spencer heidi wedding thing played out tonight...AND HE GOT HER DRUNK AND GOT HER TO DO IT....i love this show
@Dr. Michael Mancini: Speaking of Joel McHale, did you know he was a walk-on tight end (but never played) on the University of Washington '91 National Championship team? You wouldn't know it from looking at him but dude is 6'4" (though I did notice when Seth Green was on that he looked even more minuscule than usual).
@Dr. Michael Mancini: Being 6'4"-6'5" myself, other celebrities in this height range include Bob Saget, Tim Robbins, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow, Tom Selleck, Craig Kilborn, Josh Homme, Vince Vaughn, and possible Clint Eastwood before age took a toll.
So my girlfriend has her stupid friend who listens to Nickelback and obviously doesn't like me over, and she's talking about which text has more application in the modern world: The Art of War or The Prince.
My question to DUAN: What sort of mental state do I need to be in to make it legal for me to hit her until she leaves?
@notthequarterback: My guess is a Pats team from last year. Got to be a lot of red zone chances (i.e. big play passing game) against an above-average secondary.
Speaking of, should we find a way to do trivia somewhere with others?
@Rock You Like An Iracane: Cleveland is 17th in pass defense, hardly above-average. And those passes were both passes originating FROM the red zone...and they were both horrid passes.
Not sure about trivia...you're never playing anymore, so I think we all assumed you weren't interested.
@Scott Mitchell Revival Effort: I'm not sure if you've listened to it in it's entirety, but now that you're a confirmed fan you should really listen to Return from Cookie Mountain. It's a very different sound than Dear Science but the authorship and entirety of scope are really commendable. Dave Sitek is a genius.
