To the BCS, who claims that their system makes the "regular season matter", I give you:
Cal 10, Washington 42
There was nothing for California to play for with a bowl berth already wrapped up and its postseason future determined by how the pecking order of the Pac-10's mid-tier bowl agreements play out.
@Clarence Rosario: I hate the BCS as much as anyone, but I think that argument only applies to situations where the teams actually have a chance at making a playoff/NCG. And the report is wrong: had they won they could have gotten a better bowl game.
Besides, Cal has laid plenty of eggs this year in games in which they did have something to play for. I don't think motivation is their main problem.

You don't have to tell me that. I've been a Cal fan for 20+ years.
But imagine if 7-3 Cal was playing for a better seeding in a playoff bracket, rather than the better of the two garbage bowls? You really think the Holiday or Emerald Bowls are that compelling?
@Clarence Rosario: Agree, if they had a playoff spot on the line they certainly would have had more to play for. I was working under the assumption that any mythical playoff hopes they had would have already been snuffed out at this point.
@J Money BS: Believe me when I tell you that it's not because of their journalistic talents. They pretty much fell ass-backward into coverage of these two stories.

I guess one less week of the regular season, and a 16-team playoff with 11 automatic and 5 at-large bids would make too much sense.
