This just sucks. Dante Fowler, the top Jacksonville Jaguars pick this year and No. 3 overall in the draft, tore his ACL today during practice, according to multiple reports. ESPN.com reported the injury happened to the defensive end during an 11-on-11 drill “less than an hour into the first day of rookie minicamp.”

The moment was captured on video by Chad Weeks, and it’s heartbreaking to watch.

Fowler hasn’t signed his contract yet, according to the Florida Times-Union, but he still should be covered by the injury protection waiver. The paper explains it like this:

Under the rookie wage scale, Fowler is due to sign a contract that is worth $20,737,302. Before mini-camp, players sign a protection form that holds the team to their slotted contract in case of injury.

ESPN reported that a source confirmed Fowler had signed a waiver, which is some comfort at best in an otherwise cruel situation.
