Trainers for Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios had to be separated after an altercation in Macau this morning, ahead of their scheduled fight.
The fighters are sharing a gym in the basement of the Venetian Hotel, site of Saturday's bout. Rios's training sessions was scheduled to end at 11 a.m. so Pacquiao could move in, but Rios's camp stayed late to conduct interviews. Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach confronted Rios's trainer Robert Garcia and strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza.
It stayed verbal, with lots of "piece of shit"s and "get the fuck out of here"s, until Ariza—who used to work for Pacquiao—mocked Roach's speech patterns due to Parkinson's disease. Roach approached Ariza, Ariza kicked Roach, Roach called Rios camp member Donald Leary a "Mexican motherfucker," Ariza rushed Roach, called Roach a "faggot," and this is what passes for prefight hype these days.
Meanwhile Rios is just chilling on an elliptical machine in the back the entire time.
Here's another angle shot by Elie Seckbach, who once again managed to become part of the story.
After the scuffle, Garcia said Roach had called Seckbach "a fucking Jew." Roach explained it this way:
"I said, 'Are you the Jewish reporter,' and he said, 'What, are you a racist?' And I said, 'No. I just don't know your name.'"
Both Rios and Seckbach have a history with Roach. Before a Pacquiao-Margarito bout three years ago, Seckbach—who's notoriously close to Rios's camp—filmed Rios and Margarito making jokes about Roach's Parkinson's. Seckbach then edited out those jokes before publishing his video.
