Today's entry: something called the Global Language Monitor says that "Tebowing" is now an accepted English word. Defined as "the act of taking a knee in prayer during an athletic contest," Tebowing now takes its place alongside other the perfectly cromulent words in the English language, if a provocative press release is to believed. It may come as news to most of the universe that the World Scrabble Championships took place last week, and ended yesterday when Nigel Richards of New Zealand defeated Aussie Andrew Fisher, 3-2. Richards ended the five-day tournament with 95 points on the word "omnified"—which, as proof that humans can still beat the machines, spell check refuses to recognize as a word. More »

For the second year in a row, Merriam-Webster OnLine is asking readers to vote for the Word of the Year; in 2006, as you may recall, the winner was "truthiness." This year they're limiting the field to a list of 20 words that they've selected "from frequent hits to Merriam-Webster OnLine and some popular submissions to Merriam-Webster's Open Dictionary."
