Just a few things...

1) Glad to see at least there is some mixed opinion about whether or not I should have been banned. Not surprised that many of you "danced on my grave." Probably the same person that said he would like to throw batteries at my head if he ever met me. Nice touch. No banning needed there I guess.

2) Will did seem to admit that he banned me because he was upset about the news and I wasn't helping matters by pointing out the obvious problems associated with Pujols situation. I don't think he did it because I had an opposite view or was being obnoxious. Being associated with steroid dealers is not a good thing if you are trying to be MLB's poster boy and I can understand being upset when its a player you truly look up to. Join the club.

3) I have posted numerous other things on various other topics -- not just steroids and Bonds. So quit saying that. It's just plain ignorant. I have even submitted ideas to Will on things that he did not catch on particular busy sports days, etc. and he thanked me for them. I think the fact that Will said he would prob re-issue me an invite was somewhat of an admission of possible overreaction. He has not yet nor has he responded to an email I wrote. I just didn't feel like waiting around to respond to what people said.

4) I have always stated my points to the extreme to show the hypocrisy associated with the witch hunt/hate fest that consumed many of your opinions about Bonds. This recent news only allowed me to furthur prove my point that one should be careful when throwing stones, you never know when your house will turn to glass. Of course most of what I say is to get a rise out of people but I am not a troll. I am a baseball fan, a Giants fan, a Bonds fan and a sports fan. None of those are easy right now but nonetheless I won't shy away from expressing my opinion -- unless of course I'm banned. But at that point, who really gives a $hit.
Glossina Glossinidae

Holy shiznit did this thread blow up last night.

I think it's more Tsetse being a jackass and twisting a quoted post like he did to Unsilent. You can disagree with people here, even Will, but you don't have to rub it in other people's faces. It's like a toddler throwing a tantrum in a sandbox.

Ron Sr. makes an excellent post about Big Papi. The guy has always been huge, but to he couldn't hit jack in MN and suddenly became Ruth in Boston.
Juancho

Few quickies-

A) dburba- I'm a Cubs fan too, but I don't think that the current Cubs fan "regret" over the Pujols allegations is based on midwestern civility. You say that in Boston the town would go insane with glee if it happened to A-Rod. I don't think that is because of a difference in the two cities. It's just because, even though the Cards are our rival, Pujols isn't an arrogant DICK. I'll be honest, though, if the Cubs were actually IN the hunt this season, I'd probably have taken the news with a bit of glee. Instead, the Reds and the Cards entire roster could be found guilty of TREASON and it still wouldn't matter- the Cubs STILL wouldn't be in the race.

B) Re: TsteTste. I too have no problem with Will banning him. Debate, contrary opinions, devil's advocates... all those are good things for any site that encourages comments and discussion. But, blatant antoganism does NOT belong. If that is the standard by with which Will decided to ban him, I have no problem. If he did it because Tste was "anti-Pujols", then I would have an ethics issue. The fact is, this site, as snarky and sarcastic as it may be, is also quite the SMART sports site. And, while it's not necessarily a MENSA meeting, the last thing it needs is the arrogant jerk trying to pick fights or throw rocks.

C) Here's an interesting thought I had while having a discussion regarding the concept of "Let 'em ALL Juice."- If there is a higher rate of injury, etc.. for juiced players, doesn't that help balance things out a tad, perhaps? This may be tongue in cheek here, but there is SOME credence to the thought behind the humor: The fact that Bonds (supposedly/allegedly) hit 73 home runs in a season when he was juiced deserves MORE respect because he managed to avoid the serious injuries being juiced can cause. (DO I mean this with a straight face? No. But... it is food for thought. They juice, but the risk of injury goes up. Is it a fair trade?)
Andy Lurie

3 things...

1) Everyone's favorite plagiarist/obnoxious radio host, Colin Cowherd, has spent a pretty big part of this morning talking about Deadspin and the report about Pujols' trainer. So, the word is getting around.

2) I guess everyone's already chimed in on this, but 2 cents... TseTseFly didn't do anything wrong. He stated his opinion and, though he did so forcefully and with little regard for Will's or anyone else's feelings, he had every right to do so. Just because we like Albert Pujols doesn't make it right to boot someone who doesn't like him from the site. That strikes me as ridiculous. I mean, come on guys, this isn't a fan site. And obviously, before you all attack me for defending TseTse, I say all this with the utmost respect for Will and the way he runs the site (he should know I'm a fan).

3) Let's not all get trapped in hyperbole here. Baseball's not going to end up on OLN, it's not going to crash and burn, life as we know it won't end if Pujols or any other stars are on HGH or amphetamines. It'll suck, and baseball will take a hit, but it'll bounce back. It always does. Remember the cocaine problem way back when? The strike? Still here, still popular. Baseball ain't hockey.
Hail to the Victors

Cough*Big Papi*Cough

Just saying a nobody in Minn. comes back to crush my Yanks? Kind of "juice"y don't ya think?

NO NO...sorry. I am not going to go crazy with this. Raffy is the only big star proven to do steroids and Barry Bonds is the biggest star we all think, and think we know, that did steroids. Everyone is kind of just throwing out names and guesses and all because of Jason Grimsley?! I still stand about Pujols and even Sosa (to an extent) because what real proof is there?

Unless I am missing something, a bum of a relief pitcher got nailed cheating and decided to go Jose Canseco on everyone. Now this could be a huge issue and real names could be brought up and proven to have juiced, but in all reality I think we will forget about this fairly quickly. It's all circumstantial hearsay. Again, unless I am missing something it's just word of mouth from a guy that was caught. Maybe he is telling the truth, or maybe he was already thinking of the book deal?

That said, Albert: CHANGE TRAINERS! I mean damn you might as well stop by Balco for a tour the next time you are in the Bay Area.
Ronald Mexico Sr.

On TseTseFly...

At first I thought the move of deleting him was against what the internet is for. However, after sleeping on it, I think what you did was right. Although he may play the devil's advocate, which I think is good for dialogue, his repeated comments ONLY about Bonds and/or steroids was overly obnoxious and detrimental to the issue at hand. It wasn't good enough for him to make his point once, but flet he had to take over all of the comments.

I feel your pain, Will -- I'd feel the same way if this was Joe Mauer -- but it's the wrong call. TseTse may be obnoxious, but he has some valid points, and wasn't being personal.

Think of it this way: if you were a Giants fan, you would have had to cancel half the accounts here.

All this is said, by the way, with great respect for the way you run this blog. You cheer for your team respectfully and hopefully, but without the whining when they lose and the gloating when the win. For that, see generally Bill Simmons.
Sir Poopsalot

You know what, the NHL should go Air Hockey style and set a limit of goals to win. Like the standard 7. The first one to seven wins. Get rid of periods and stoppages and just play through until there are seven goals. How sweet would that be?

Inflate the puck and the sticks too, and this also might require a person play goalie and also be out on the ice as a forward etc.

I don't know about you, but NHL Air Hockey sounds pretty damn sweet to me.
Ronald Mexico Sr.

Look at the numbers, in baseball's juice era, time on the DL skyrocketed! the ballplayer's bodies couldn't handle all the muscle they were putting on it so things ripped more, strained more, etc. Ripken, on the other hand, was an iron man, played through injuries, spent no time on the DL.
With 164 posts this is starting to get into Leather/Cooper-gate territory.

After deep reflection I can honestly say that if these allegations are true it is not going to change my outlook on baseball. I am not going to give up my seats to the Red Sox game because one or more players may have been taking something in the past and/or present. (Youkilis? What about Alex Gonzales? He had one big year for the Marlins.)

What I am not going to do is go out and buy a t-shirt with a player name or a replica jersey. I am using the same reasoning that I wouldn't be wearing a Duke men's lacrosse shirt, if I owned one; I don't want to be seen as supporting the player, or in the case of Duke, the team. Marty Barrett was my favorite player growing up and I have thought of getting a Sox jersey with his number but now, as much as I would like to believe he was clean, I am going to have to take the approach that everyone is suspect.
Mr. Soul

I guess this is old news, but I am just getting to the site. The thing that is most impressive about this is that Deadspin is slowly creating a name for itself. With information, or SPECULATION, like this it would be hard for main stream sport-media to ignore it. I applaud the work done to uncover some truths behind the affidavit. I mean this is really impressive.

Having wrote that, as for as Pujols I am not so sure what to is so shocking. His trainer has been implicated by Jason Grimsley? I know this could be huge, and deadspin "breaking" this is truly, well, awesome, but I just think everyone needs to look at the whole issue here. I mean this is Jason Grimsley, you know? Like he may have thrown some people under the bus, but how credible. I kind of get the impression that this is another horrible piece of baseball news that probably will kind of wash away. I mean "Game of Shadows" was huge, and it totally summed up Barry Bonds. Yet, it's basically forgotten about now. I just hope that Pujols is clean, but most importantly I hope we finally start getting to the bottom of steroids in baseball. Either way, congrats to Deadspin.
Ronald Mexico Sr.

I'm not saying Pujols is guilty or not, but if you associate with bad people, you deserve all the crap that comes with it. Hell, who among us hasn't liked the feeling of a good cold or algery medicine. I really don't know how I feel about this steroids/HGH business. On the one hand, I hate the players for tainting the game that I love and calling into question the purity of the game, on the other hand, can you really blame the players for taking advantage of a league that was more than willing to look the other way if it made business better. Owners and GM's knew what was going on. The press knew what was going on, yet they choose to ignore it. And we are not talking about the past 5 years. They knew Player A was cheating, but hell, he was hitting .320/50/124. You think we are going to rock the boat? You have two choices here, abandon the game you love on the principle that the game is tainted and you can't respect any violation of the rules, or hope that the game is self correcting and those that cheated will be judged by history. And if any Pirates are guilty in all of this, well, they even suck at cheating.
Scott Senay

Wow. When Patrick said one of the names is "shocking," he wasn't messing around. I, too, am a Cub fan, and even I was rooting for the guy.

I do think it is interesting, however--going along with some of the minor league scouting reports--one of my best friends' parents used to be a host family for players in a summer league in Kansas. Pujols showed up to his house with some other players (on their way out for the night), and my buddy remarked that he was not really the guy he is now physically.

Will, BIG ups to you for posting this. I know how much it must suck to have to break this, but you should be proud for Deadspin that you did. As far as Olbermann goes--I think that was a pretty pussy way to go about it. He knew all the names, but instead of putting his neck on the line, he sites Deadspin and shows a screen shot. It is amazing to me how that guy has gone from a guy that I thought was the coolest guy on the planet to a complete, spineless d-bag that uses other people to advance himself and his show.
Thanks, Yost. I appreciate your follow-through. I think if there's a lesson here, it's that despite hard times surrounding the loss of Goose/Pujols (Gooseholes?), Maverick/Will will eventually get his groove back, vanquish the faceless, opaque-masked enemy of unnamed country/HGH-TstseFly, win back Kelly McGillis/Shari (Shari to bartender as she joins Will at the airport: "I'll have what he's having... hemlock, is it?"), and return to Top Gun/the blogosphere as an instructor/better than ever.

Sadly, Will can't grasp this right now, because he's hunched over the sink in some whitey-tighties, but you never know who's gonna step in for Goose. Sometimes you get someone like Merlin, and you're all, "Shit! We've been wasting Tim Robbins this entire movie!" As long as Sundowner isn't playing first base, the Cards should be okay...

i consider myself to be morally sound, but i can't get too worked up over HGH. yes, it probably gives you a competitive edge, may be bad for your body long-term, sets a bad example for kids etc., but if MLB drug use is as widespread as it is now appearing to be, then we need to refocus our approach to the problem because the current one isn't working.

in this case i think we need to ask ourselves why the line between acceptable and unacceptable performance enhancers is where it is. and don't say steroids are morally wrong because they are illegal; there are numerous illegal activities that many of us don't find to be immoral.

it's the lack of perspective that gets me. i hate to say it, but the worst part about all this for me is seeing my favorite sport get dragged repeatedly through the mud whilst the NFL, a league that we all just *know* is at least as drug-dependent as MLB, continues to enjoy its status as the new national pastime.
Oddibe McDowell

This will continue to be a discussion, I'm sure, but I wanted to get a quick line in here about Pujols general demeanor.

If this stuff is true (and even as a Cubs fan, I'm still holding out hope that it's not) doesn't it kind of seem like Pujols' behavior - low key and amicable with the media, non-accusatory of Bonds and others, as mentioned above, starting foundations - just kind of seems calculated? It just feels like the guy, from the beginning of his career, has known exactly how to act to keep everyone saying, "Wow, he's really good, and he's such a good guy! No way he's juicing..."

And this is pure hindsight; I wrote a post on here earlier this week about Pujols not being a roids/greenies/HGH guy. Surprise though it may be, it kind of feels like some telling signs were there before now.
PostmanE

This is exactly why the "Bonds Apologists" found it hypocritical for stadiums full of people to be targeting their virility at Bonds singularly. We knew from the SI Caminiti interview back in 2002 that as many as 50% of major leaguers were juicing. The Canseco book and Game of Shadows had already been scooped on this account. So from the "Bonds Apologists": If you hate steroids so much that you need to carry around a bedsheet painted with an asterisk, why are you even coming to MLB games?
Lou Patterbrock

The sad thing is that you can't appreciate greatness anymore in sports. How can an athlete be so much better than all his juiced competitors? He can't unless he is using something.

For all those who are not outraged by this, would you consider yourself a moral person? I'm not saying you aren't but this really bothers me because of the lack of morals on the part of the players of each sport.
Henry Porter

I'm pretty sentimental about this stuff, but I keep coming back to three things: 1. For at least a little while longer, part of the blame for this has to fall at MLB's feet for being so lax about the drug policy for SO long. If it's going to really get cleaned up, it will take time. 2. Like others have said here, a lot of this is because of the intensity of the focus. Are we really thinking that NFL players don't take HGH?? 3. I work in book publishing, and have caught wind of editors taking pills to stay up for an all-night session of editing that they otherwise wouldn't get done. It's an inexact analogy to athletic activity, of course, but it still produces a result. I don't see anyone threatening to boycott books. (Of course, I don't see many people threatening to READ books, but eulogizing one American pastime a night is enough for me...)
powder

BullsBlogger - I watch football. But I love baseball. I don't know if I'm just naive or stupid, but for some reason, news of Pujols using steroids (or HGH) would be devastating to me.

I know nothing is confirmed, but obviously, there are a lot of players involved in this. Link to Pujols or not, I think we all get the feeling that the proverbial shit is going to hit the fan sometime sooner rather than later.

We should expect stuff like this, since players will do anything to get ahead, and always have, and a lot of them have been taught since high school that they should do anything get ahead, but I dunno. You expect it, but you're never prepared for it when your favorite players disappoint you.

If Pujols has really been a user, and more names come out, I really can't justify giving the MLB any more of my money. Or emotional investment. I stuck around after the strike because really, labor disputes don't really stick to your heart or head when you're 12. I wasn't too attached to McGwire or Sosa or Bonds.

But this? We all put a lot of blind faith in the players to make a ton of money, play hard, and still play fair. This is despite the fact that we know baseball has never really been clean. So why is it that I expected Pujols to be better (on the field and off) than everyone else?

Is it my fault for investing so much time, money and emotion into some pithy kid's game? Maybe I'm taking this too seriously. After all, this is what they serve alcohol at games for, right?
BowdenBowdenBowden

williamzabka-

You, good sir, are a genius.

Also, I've got to admit, I've wondered recently about Pujols. (Will, please don't ban me, I'm not talking smack). I'm just saying, that after the whole McGwire affair, any player that looks like a superhero, well, I'm going to have questions about. Combine Pujols torrid start with the fact that the guy looks like a muscleman leads me to wonder about him, as much as I hate to say it. And I really do hate to do that.

This whole thing also brings me to Cal Ripken.

Granted, Cal was never the muscleman that Albert or Mark were. And this is just my speculation. Growing up in Maryland and Virginia, that guy was my idol. But now I honestly wonder about him too. Playing so many games in a row? I wonder.

*Shudder*

No Cal, not you too. But the way things are these days, I have my suspicions.
Blackaces

No, but really -- this all seems premature. Does it equal more suspicion of Pujols than yesterday? Of course. But telling Will to walk away from ledges? That seems a bit much. Plus, Will always lands safely on his feet, like a cat, so he'd have to choose a different method.
powder

If we can take a step back...

There is a large percentage of players that have been/are still dirty. I think we all agree on that.

Now, let's say Pujols is clean. That means he is having one of the greatest seasons ever without cheating while he's competing against guys who are. If that's the case, then he would have to be the most dominant hitter in history. Keep in mind that on top of the sick OPS and clutch homers, he never strikes out.

Is it possible for anyone to be so great that they can put up numbers for the ages against guys that are cheating, who even with their cheating can't stop him or keep up with him? That's asking for a lot of belief.
Killa Sam

That's nowhere near the uber-speculation that's been done about Bonds. Of course, we are only in day one of this fiasco, so who knows what kind of personal hell us Cardinals fan will be put through.

And, by the way, that site for Pujols's foundation is the very reason people will view him differently if he has done something wrong. The guy does great things for his community, something Bonds never seemed to care about.

Oh, and if there's a vote going on, I vote 'yea' on banning TsetseFly. That guy's always been an idiot.
William

There are many, MANY other things athletes can take besides steroids or HGH to improve performance. Newspapers and talk radio dorks use the word "steroids" when they really mean "illegal performance enhancers." There are so many designer drugs and hormones out there if athletes have the money and the inclination to find them.

In track, the guys that run the 100m are on a completely different set of (illegal) meds than the guys who run the 400m. The Olympic track officials come up with new tests and the athletes get new masking agents or new drugs altogether. Same in cycling. Anyone think Lance A is *really* drug free?

"Cleaning up sports" will be a loooong process. I wonder if baseball officials wish they had just kep their heads comfortably in the sand.
spf30

Presumably, Pujols has been tested at least once for anabolic steroids, since baseball does test for that. Anabolic steroids are the one sure-fire way to build muscle mass at the cost of long term health.

Honestly, I don't think it's that surprising that a personal trainer knows where to find illegal supplements. It seems like EVERY baseball and football player willing to talk about steroids goes on and on about "how available they are." Preusmably, THEY know where to get them, and I'm sure all the personal trainers to all the athletes (clean and unclean) out there know somebody who knows how to get dirty drugs.
JB

Bulls Blogger- I'm not saying I PREFER Roidball vs. Baseball, I just prefer it to "Baseball with all the allegations and constant whispering".

If this were a perfect world, none of the players would juice, amp up, etc... but it's not. And so, with the juicers always being one step ahead of the testers, it just depresses me that nobody seems to be able to accomplish anything in baseball anymore without the suggestion that it may be 'tainted'.

I'd rather remove the substances than the black cloud, but since that seems impossible, I'd rather that they just stop the witchhunt.

Look at the NFL. They can talk all they want about players being clean, but, we don't seem to CARE. I'm saying that I wish we didn't care if it happens in baseball. Thanks to a media hungry Congress, though, that's never going to happen.
Andy Lurie

Last night before bed I just happened to read the month old Sports Illustrated story on Pujols and his trainer. After the coverage of Bonds and his trainer my gut instinct was to think that Pujols or his guy was dirty too. Of course this was after I went online to check out Jason Grimsley's career and started to speculate about which of his former teammates was dirty.

Now I don't know what to think. Is it innocent until proven guilty or suspect everyone?
Mr. Soul

Unless Frank was juicing from his freshman year at Auburn, he's always been just huge (I believe he was a tight end on the football team as well?), and was one guy who would make snide, thinly veiled references to himself getting screwed because other guys were getting some sort of advantage. No way he's on the list.

And his extra weight these days isn't muscle, it's all fat. A shame about all his injuries, he'd be well over 500 HRs by now without them. One of the best first 7 or 8 seasons by a player ever, a line drive hitter to all fields that was big enough that they just happened to go over the fence, more laserbeams than moonshots.

How much would it suck to be taken down by Jason Freaking Grimsley? I mean, if Bonds or Raffy or someone ratted you out, at least they mattered to the game. Who the hell was going to remember Grimsley until this happened?
Iron Chef Xenu

There were other concerns about his defensive ability and where Pujols would fit on a Major League team.

Consequently, a frustrated Albert Pujols -- after spending a year at Kansas City's Maple Woods Community College, where he met strength and conditioning guru Chris Mihlfeld and started the process of building an Adonis-like upper body-- waited 13 rounds before getting the call from the Cardinals.
TsetseFly

Taken from the link related to Pujols. Reading the article, you are struck by how many times the author talks about how "sculpted" and "ripped" Pujols is, ultimately glossing him as "Adonis-like." Oh, the halcyon days of 2001 - no way in hell any writer talks about any baseball player using such terms now.
BillyPaultzRulz

Two thoughts- A) I'm a CUB fan, and I think Pujols is innocent.

B)I must be in the minority here, but, I don't CARE who juices and who doesn't. I know there are legal implications with suspensions and all, but I just wish the MLB would say "Screw it" and let 'em all juice. The argument is always turned into a "what about the children?!" debate.

Let 'em all use steriods, GHB, PCP, LSD... I don't care. Let 'em use aluminum bats, and have the pitcher stand behind the same kind of screen they use in batting practice.

If they are all allowed to cheat, then the witch hunt ends. At this stage, no matter who the player is, if they've done ANYTHING in baseball in the past 15-20 years, they seem to have somehow been suggested as being on the juice. Ripken? Maddux?

Screw it. Let 'em all cheat so it can go back to being a game instead of a guessing game. The "children" will have to fend for themselves and hope that they have decent parenting. (As they should in other issues that have nothing to do with children, like legalization of alcohol & tobaccao, pornography, etc....)
Andy Lurie

You might want to clarify the language a little there. The way it is written it comes across that Mihlfeld (if it is him) did the actual supplying to Grimsley. According to the redacted document, Mihlfeld didn't supply Grimsley with anything other than the name of a source for speed. Grimsley then made the contact, and presumably Grimsley also asked that third, unnamed, individual if he/she could supply him with steroids and HGH.

The wording is very precise in the redacted document: the trainer referred Grimsley to an amphetamine source. I'm sure if the trainer had referred him to a steroid or HGH source, the document would say that. So deep breaths, walk away from the ledge, and be patient.
Dweeze
