The only part about the original Rocker story that bothered me is that the quotes were obtained when Rocker was driving his car. Really, most people make no sense when they try to drive and talk at the same time. Seriously, start asking drivers things like "What was your most embarrassing moment?" and "Did you and Alicia cheat on me while I was dating her?", people can't censor themselves at all. It's really not fair.

Amazing interview, Will. The thing that surprised me most about Rocker is his apparent emotional maturity (yeah, I never thought those words would be in the same sentence with the word "Rocker" either) about the end of his career and his limitations as an athlete.

I thought he'd come across as completely bitter instead of just partially bitter (e.g., John Schuerholz). And I agree with BBB's point about Rocker being made into somewhat of a racism martyr by the media, allowing us to avoid more complex racial issues that most of the media are woefully ill-equipped to address.

Many athletes regardless of race demonstrate incredible ignorance and insensitivity when discussing people of other races, religions and, especially, sexual orientation (see Joey Porter for the latest example).

Rocker doesn't appear to much more than an aggro jock who got a little too full of himself and let himself be duped into thinking he could make such outrageous and ignorant comments without consequence. Probably because a lot of similar talk went on in the locker room, by white and black players alike, on a daily basis.

The thing is that I think he's half right about being labelled The Racist - it's easier to think that we're making inroads against Racism if we go after a guy like Rocker and make him the face of Racism. That way, when he goes away, we can claim victory and go back to all our stereotypes and assumptions.

I think, to be slightly serious for the moment, is that this might be a valid point... if not for the fact that he's, you know, racist. It's all well and good to claim that those particular lines from the one particular interview were pulled out of context, but when you continue to hand out quotes like the gem about Jeff Pearlman, it's hard to claim that you're a scapegoat.
