they actually had a separate PE class, boys and girls together, for the kids coming over from the gifted magnet school.

Mine was even better. We had a separate PE class for the 20 or so kids who were in the accelerated science/math program. But gym classes usually have about 30 kids, so they needed to fill some slots. Who did they put in there with us? That's right, the ESL/Special Ed kids. And I don't mean the ESL kids and the Special Ed kids... I mean the kids that were both. Fun times.

My favorite thing in gym class was floor hockey. If I could skate, I would've played real hockey. It was fun, and I liked the fact that I was able to check people into the walls under the guise of 'going for the ball.'

Alabama requires one year of PE in high school, with no subsitutions (like band or etc) - they actually had a separate PE class, boys and girls together, for the kids coming over from the gifted magnet school. And even in that group, I was physically worthless. I can't lift anything heavier than money or whiskey anymore.

A burpee is a calisthenic move. There are a couple of variations. In the bootcamp class I teach occasionally, we do it this way:
1. Start standing.
2. Crouch down, placing your hands at pushup width...kick your legs out behind you so you're in pushup position.
3. Do a pushup.
4. Pull your feet back up so you're in a crouch.
5. Jump as high as you can, bringing your hands over your head and clapping.
6. Land and repeat.

Obviously it's all done without resting at any point.

Variations include doing it with a pullup (you do the move under a pullup bar, obviously), without the pushup or jump, etc. It doesn't sound bad, I know. Do as many as you can in 2 minutes and see if you don't throw up before getting to the full 2 min.

I was in band as well CN, but at my school we had to take PE once a week. Fucking school officials.

NY has minimum phys ed requirements, or at least did when I was in school... I think you had to have something like at least two days a week of gym. So not only would band not get you out of gym class, but my school's policy was that nothing got you out of gym. Play on a varsity team that practices every day of the week? You're still doing Project Adventure.
