Thanks for the advice everyone. I should have made it clear that this is not where i'm actually going to show her the ring and say 'Well, ya wanna?' This is just to take her and mom and dad for a nice meal afterwards.

What's really sad is that however nice a restaurant we go to, what I'm really looking forward to is pizza and Old Style at Geno's East, but that's probably not what she'll want in her heart of hearts on the night (and great suggestion on the corking fee, as I have access to all sorts of lovely small French vintages where no one will know how comparatively inexpensive they are. I look good and save a small amount of money. Hurrah!)

i will say up front that i am not a "man of culture" but with regard to this whole corking fee thing...

a lot of places will only allow you to bring your own wine if it is a wine that they do not have. in other words, they may have a $1,500 bottle of Caymus in the cellar, and thus will not let you bring in a $500 bottle of Caymus, (even though they don't have that particular year).

just make sure and ask is all.

You can't go to the top of the top places for that price (I doubt you could even get a table at Trotters, Tru, or Alinea with only a few weeks notice anyways). There are places you can go though, these would be my suggestions, depending on what you like. I also recommend you consider going outside of River North/Gold Coast, some of the best places for a proposal aren't in that area (Heck, only Tru is in that area of the group of Trotter's, Alinea, Moto and Tru).

Ambria -- in Lincoln Park, but I actually know someone else who proposed here, and he had her parents there, and the answer was positive. Pretty pricey but road-tested as a winner.

MK -- this is in Gold Coast/River North. Heard a lot of good things about it.

Scylla -- went here with my now-wife for a special occasion, it's a small place in an old house in Bucktown, the food was excellent and it would be a nice, intimate setting for a proposal. Also the cheapest one I've listed here.

Spiaggia -- also Gold Coast, might be hard to get a table. Pricey fine Italian, great reputation.

Geja's Cafe -- south part of Lincoln Park (not too far from Ambria, actually), a fondue restaurant, usually has live classical guitar, dimly lit, my wife and I think this place is very romantic. You should know whether a fondue place would fly with your girlfriend. Also, they don't really take reservations on the weekends except maybe very early evening, but if you call and say you're proposing maybe they'd make an exception?

Everest -- on the 40th floor of the Chicago Stock Exchange. May be on the pricey side. Great views.

Still no cogent rationale for hating Peyton, from where I'm standing. Why wouldn't you want to see the Colts beat the Pats, just so that the Pats-Colts rivalry can finally actually become just that? (Same way that BoSox-Yankees wasn't a rivalry until after 2004, as Simmons himself used to always say.)

Major- The one thing I don't believe is that there wasn't overwhelming evidence to overturn the call. At first it was ruled a fumble and I don't think, and I'm sure people will agree with me, that there was sufficient visual evidence to change it to an incomplete pass.

But that's just me, my opinion isn't changing and neither is yours and I'll just let it go.

Jon Gruden's super conservative playcalling didn't help us win that game either, to spread a little blame around.

EBW - If you're a starving young academic then I'd go with the guy who suggested the Signature Room at John Hancock. It's not cutting edge but it's a very nice meal and it's showy (unless it's overcast) Tru's for going all out foodwise, but the view from 95 is worth the price of admission.

I don't know why it matters whether or not it's a playoff game - the rules are the same regardless.

In any case, I have seen it come into play a number of times. Can't remember specifics, but a rough search came up with a few instances - a Broncos-Redskins game in 2005, a Bears-Vikings game this season. Obviously it's rare, but it's not unheard of.

And for every Pats fan who says the tuck call was the correct ruling (which it was), stop saying the league "changed the rules" for illegal contact after the first Colts/Pats playoff game. No rules were changed - they just made a point to enforce rules that had been loosely enforced up until that point. (Very similar to the fact that the tuck rule was enforced quite loosely before the Brady play.)
