@PeteJayhawk: Oh definitely some truth to it. Mathematicians have incredible egos, by and large in my experience (think the Stellan Skarsgård character from "Good Will Hunting").

I think it's difficult to definitively state what work was Nash's own and what work was "influenced" by others. In my estimation, Nash's work feels so intuitive that it'd be impossible to not see elements of it in the work of others. But Nash gets the credit as the one who put the pieces together, so that has to mean something.

Don't lament not digging math. I am so burnt out on it right now, and I am putting off my Stochastic Processes homework to DUAN (it can be used as a verb, right?) here.

@Scott Chill: I really wish I understood mathematics. I really do. I'm more of a bullshit artist, which speaks well to my past jobs in sales and consulting, my current job in customer service, and my current major in political science/urban planning.

The guy I was discussing game theory and Nash with the other night was talking about how Nash got a lot of credit for stuff that others did. I'm skeptical of that, because anything that would have been considered his accomplishment would have come long before the movie. But maybe he was an attention hog long before the movie? I'm not entirely sure where said discussion went since I was drunk at the time; is there any truth to this?

@PeteJayhawk: true true...but i am fascinated by how particular issues become lightening rods and others (which are probably more worrisome) disappear from popular consciousness--for example, how people can sit back and say that they genuinely thought that our adventure in iraq would go swimmingly, when most think tanks and other high-profile consultants (example: institute for defense analysis) knew that it was an inevitable failure. the only thing they were surprised by was that it didn't implode sooner. You would think that this would make giant wholesale change in less than 4 years....

@PeteJayhawk: Yeah, Game Theory has become kind of an offshoot for me given that my interests so far (probability theory, mostly) have kind of dried up.

Nash's developments are amazing to me, in that he takes concepts that feel intuitive and natural and obvious, and provided formal information on mutually beneficial outcomes and such. Also shows the line between genius and madness is quite thin.

@Scott Chill: One way that you may be able to make such a place work financially is to partner up with, of all things, a local church. There are always new churches sprouting up, and most new churches start out renting out from local schools or other venues when they first start out. Having a church as a long-term tenant - especially a tenant that would occupy the building during Sunday Mornings - may help to make the theater idea more viable. Just a thought.

@doxastic: Yes, that too of course. But Gates > Carnegie due to the truly altruistic nature of what he does, whereas Carnegie did it in part to be remembered. I also have a lot of respect for Gates in that he's not only the world's foremost benefactor, but he requires results. He runs his foundation like a business - not in regards to profits or the like, just that he demands that his money be spent wisely and effectively.

My Dad runs a non-profit, its has a tighter business model then any for-profit I've worked for. Trust me, I get that.

And that's one of the things that I feel is overlooked when people talk about teachers' salaries. If a kid like that knows that you pull down a respectable income, that kid would probably be more likely to respect you.

If that kid knows that a teacher doesn't make much when compared to the rest of the workforce (who hold college degrees), that youthful arrogance (rich child or poor child) takes over and treats that teacher like a piece of shit.

I want to teach, but that's one of the reasons that I haven't gone back for my Master's or certification.

@buwolverine: I was a budget analyst in the museum world, then moved. Currently working for a cultural venue. The two things aren't contradictory - museums and arts venues are run like businesses, and need financial management. Non-Profit is just a way of organization. I'd lose my mind if I were analyzing budgets in a factory or bank.

@The Great Barstoolio: Sorry to continually reference my moribund hometown, but the sad thing is that, despite the grand effort and outpouring of funds to renovate the Coronado, I fear for its future. Rockford recently lost the last of its corporate headquarters (it was once home to quite a few) and with them go the big money and patrons of the arts.
