The reason he repeats himself is because that's his style and he's been successful with it. At least he writes about things he's passionate about. 99% of the sports articles I read are written by guys who care more about craft services than the game. When he mentions the Clippers he gets killed for crawling out of his niche. What if Will couldn't mention the Cards? What if A.J. couldn't mention cripples? I don't want to live in a world where I can't write about the Hawkeyes and poop. Just keep doing your thing Simmons and I promise to back off a little, OK?
I only hope his TV ideas continue to be as successful as his work on Mel's Diner and The Fantasy Show.

i was speaking more to his success as a sports writer than in terms of financial success. the security i mentioned espn gives him is financial. he can plug along with his columns without really venturing into anything new (as a writer) and espn will pay him well. if he really wanted to be at the forefront of this independent online sports writing movement thing or whatever it is, he could do so given his following. however, i think at this point, the writing is becoming secondary to his tv ambitions, which is probably why espn included that in his new contract.
