1) He doesn't linger on boring topics, box scores or stuff (read: Hockey) that most radio hosts put me to sleep with. What? I have no idea where you are, and you became a commenter today, so there's no way to get a feel for your background, but I guaran-damn-tee there are better ways for you to spend your time than listening to mid-day national sports radio, let alone one of the mid-tier talents like Cowherd. No matter how good the host, the essence of good sports talk radio is in its local focus (provided you don't think "good sports talk radio" is an oxymoron). Beyond that handicap, to me, Cowherd ain't anything special as a host; there are hundreds of people around the country who tell unfunny jokes and perform bits other people wrote. The truly excellent radio personalities have the rare skill of being able to provide substantive insight show after show while conveying how passionate they are about emotions sparked by sports. It's the same with sports columnists, rock bands, sitcoms... Cowherd is the "According to Jim" of sports radio.

2) Ignorance is no defense. Regardless, he wasn't ignorant of what he did. His intent was malicious. This wasn't "Read what these idiots have to say," which would have been defensible, if weird. Furthermore, from what he said, he understands enough that there are financial repercussions for overwhelming a site like that. That's enough for me to judge that he made a reckless choice.

And, FYI, he DOES suggest a DoS attack.

A Denial of Service attack is a specifically targetted internet attack, specifically designed to "make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Typically the targets are high-profile web servers, and the attack attempts to make the hosted web pages unavailable[.]"

Some basic examples (from Wikipedia):

* flooding a network, thereby preventing legitimate network traffic;

* disrupting a server by sending more requests than it can possibly handle, thereby preventing access to a service;

* preventing a particular individual from accessing a service;

* disrupting service to a specific system or person.

The simplest way of DoS attacking a website from the outside is by consuming that website's bandwidth. Funny-ha-ha, that' s the very thing Cowherd apologizes for at the beginning of the show! Though his methods are crude, he's a stupid jackass, and he's just committed a felony! Live! On air! And on an ESPNRadio.com webcam!

Wait a minute.

I've listened to this about a dozen times, and he specifically says:

"Wouldn't it be great if we went and basically gave out every day like a website, like a new young website, and just blow it up? Like, we'd have a sound effect and blow up a website? Wouldn't that be- if I told my audience every day, just one that's annoying, and we could give it to 'em, and it would blow it u- and our audience would blow it up?"

He starts his show by saying that his audience crashes websites all the time and that he's sorry for hurting those sites. Then he says that shit above. I'm really not sure exactly how you're trying to defend him, and I'm not exactly sure where you get off giving TheBigLead tips on avoiding "this frustration," which they did jack shit to provoke.

On another note, Cowherd sucks anyway.

I'm in the complete majority here that actually listens to Cowherd on a regular basis and after reading this post and the other post on the topic I feel I should speak up. I listen to it not because of his sports knowledge (or lack thereof depending on your side of the fence) but because he is entertaining. He doesn't linger on boring topics, box scores or stuff (read: Hockey) that most radio hosts put me to sleep with. On to the issue at hand.

A jackass he maybe but no where during his show did he say "lets unleash a DDoS attack on TheBigLead." He barely knows what the internet is and he has admitted it numerous times.

Maybe, I'm being to naive but I really don't think his intention was to honestly bring the site down, at least not for this long, it was more of a lets overwhelm them type "blow it up" . I really don't think it was meant to o this far where it was down for a whole day.

Like the above poster said, bloggers abound constantly try to get attention of other bloggers and radio hosts to pimp their content and this will have nothing but a positive longterm affect on thebiglead.

As a tip to TheBigLead, who uses the WordPress platform, if they had enabled Wp-Cache plugin it would have helped avoid this frustration, that and a hosting platform thats worth a damn.
