Golf is not a sport. Seriously--unless you're out of breath during play-- isn't it merely a skilled activity? Like Bocce Ball. Or smoking grass. It was really sad when Tiger didn't win more money.

curtice

I'm talking about the Palmer that Jack had to face when he first came out in the mid 60s. Clearly, there is no one out there that Tiger faces that matches that level of talent and competitiveness. Player during the 60s and 70s was up there too. The guy I pity during that timespan is Tom Weiskopf. Good player who happen to come along at the wrong time.

UkraineNotWeak

@UkraineNotWeak:I see your point, but by 1986, Palmer was pretty much done, Player was on the downside of his career...but I'll give you Trevino, and especially, Watson.

Tiger has Phil (when his head is not up his ass), Goosen (but after yesterday, I think he's scared), and Els (but maybe not anymore...he's disappeared). I think the entire field is so much better though. Johnson just came off the Nationwide Tour, which he tore up. Guys coming out of college and the mini-tours can compete with the big boys on tricked-up courses, and while it may be not week-in, week-out, they collectively have the goods.

I'm interested in the young player I can call the "next great disappointment". Charles Howell, Aaron Baddelay, Justin Rose...they've come and gone. After reading a feature on him in Esquire this month, my money is now on Adam Scott.

Juancho

Witness how Tiger could not pull off the shots, the birdie putts on 14 and 16 and the approach shots on 15 and 17, down the stretch when the pressure was on just like any other pro. Once again, the one crease in Tiger's armor was exposed. He has never come from behind to win a major. Tiger is at his best when he has the lead and he can shoot for the middle of the green and dare the others to pull off the great shots. As soon as the shoe is on the other foot, he fails just like them. Until he pulls off a Jack in 1986 like comeback, I can't put him on the same level as Nicklaus.

UkraineNotWeak

You know what I think it is? There is no Steinbrenner, no Machiavelli who goes out and buys the best players and out spends everybody else to win. Can't happen, everybody has access to the best equipment, and its all on them, if Tiger isn't contending on the third day, his only option is to play better.

That and usually the inevitable melt downs of anybody contending with him. I got to give Johnson credit for that, he knew Tiger was within striking distance and he kept his cool. But its fun to watch these guys fold like a cheap card table Charlie Weis sat on because Tiger is within a stroke of them.

Hank Scorpio-Steinbrenner

Exactly why my level of caring for golf is minimal. The ball wasn't moving and nobody was trying to prevent him from hitting the ball in the hole. From a golf fan's perspective, this was one of the most enjoyable Masters' in a long time. How many lead changes? How many ridiculous putts holed by Rory Sabbatini? How many times would a guy a stroke or two off the lead watch his chip roll off the green back to his feet twice or splash his tee shot? When Tiger is running away with it, sure, it's fun to see perfection, but it's about as suspenseful as watching local cops try to arrest the Terminator. Witnessing Johnson do what he did with Retief Goosen and Tiger breathing down his neck was amazing - a double bogey by Johnson and a string of birdies by Tiger seemed almost inexorable, and the fact that it didn't play out like that made it that much cooler.

What's funniest about this is that Tiger was struggling to play middling golf, and still almost beat the field. Appleby threw it away on the front 9, FIGJAM crapped the bed, Els (remember him?) didn't even make the weekend, and Goosen didn't look like he wanted any part of a championship dogfight.
