I lived briefly in DC, and had season tickets to the Orioles, back in 95-96 (when they weren't fucking awful). As a Brit, everyone thought I knew nothing about baseball and had to 'splain everything to me. The fact that I had PAID FOR SEASON TICKETS didn't dissuade them from this conclusion. 'Oh, on a passed third strike you can advance to first? Will wonders never cease?' I now know how patronised women must feel at sporting events.

Anyhoo, I was at the 'make up game' the day after they killed the power at Camden Yards to preserve Cal's streak, when he caught his wife in bed with Costner and refused to play. I was sitting in the box seats (it was a weekday game at 1, no one was there) enjoying Randy Johnson's pitching, when a group of Bostonians sat right behind me. One particularly fat bastard with a porn moustache had a catchphrase...'What a piece of shit (X) is...' Any player, any team, he was a piece of shit in this gentleman's eyes. 'Jay Buhner. What a piece of shit he is.' 'Lenny Webster. What a piece of shit he is.' ''Brady Anderson. What a piece of shit he is.' Literally every player received this approbation. I finaly moved to cheaper seats to avoid this idiot. Since then, I assume all people from Boston are like this guy, and refuse to go there. I passed up a post-doc at MIT, because of my fear and hatred of him and his ilk.

In short, go fuck yourself, Boston.

at the end of the Bruins season when they weren't going to make the playoff we thought we'd take in one of the final games just as something to do. the only tickets we could get were $33 each in the f'in' BALCONY. you know that place was empty that night.

so why not drop the prices just to get fans in? if those same tix were $10, i'd have been there and i would have spent probably $50 or so on beer and food. PLUS much more $ in the bars around the Garden before and after the game.

those are the people who should be most upset - in all cities around the country - the surrounding businesses that need that foot traffic during the sports seasons. that foot traffic is being priced out.

On my walk to the gym in Copley Square, I noticed such a great collection of people...

* There were the usual cast of character who had pre-gamed since 7:30 and were now stumbling home.

* You had people drinking at bars outside, just appreciating the respite from rain (despite the 35 degree weather.)

* Then you had people who just finished the marathon, and looked about as coherent as the first group.

* Finally, the out-of-town friends and family of the final group, who had no idea what was going on.

Very, very surreal combo. Then again, I was still hung over, so maybe I imagined all of it.
