It used to be that you HAD to do time on radio before you got to do TV announcing, even when both were around -- that's not the case any more. The difference is amazingly stark -- witness Vin Scully-called Dodger games vs. anyone else (even Charley Steiner, who had some experience calling games on radio before his time at ESPN.)

@Signal to Noise: Well, there's a reason why every sport has their own network. ESPN is for "sports" fans, whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean. At least each of the other networks is for a remotely knowledgable fan of that sport.

Once again, NBA on TNT is the general-network exception that proves the rule. I've been falling asleep at work because I've been staying up late to watch Charles shoot fish in a barrel. (Although I think TNT has lost tennis and pro wrestling, so it's more like NBATV that people actually watch.)

And every once in a while we get a regular season gem like the third Mavs-Suns game or a no hitter or a 7-1 Champions League game.
