1. The QBs that won 3 of the last 4 Super Bowls are Peyton Manning and Tom Brady (Roethlisberger is the other). Do you doubt for a second that Manning or Brady would play better on the Falcons than Vick has? IMO Brady has no more talent around him (on offense or defense) than Vick. Jesus, Brady's receivers are no-namers, and they play one of them on D.

2. Given 5 years of history/hindsight...who would you rather have drafted: Tomlinson or Vick?

Yup...that's what I thought. Look, I'm a Chiefs fan, I understand having to delude yourself in order to have some semblance of hope/fun. But reality is reality (Herm Edwards is our coach no matter how hard I try to pretend he isn't).

But there really are a lot of other holes on this team. If Michael Vick played at a Peyton Manning level this year, they would still miss the playoffs.

The comparison of Mike Williams was directed more toward Roddy White/Michael Jenkins. And I'm still not sold on Lelie and Price being anything special before they got here. Price had the benefit of playing across from Eric Moulds. Lelie never did anything. They may've gotten worse in Atlanta, but not exactly a significant difference.

Oh, and your modern scrambling QBs lineage was missing Kordell Stewart, Akili Smith, Jeff Blake, and Aaron Brooks, just to name a few.

Can we stop this nonsense now? I refuse to be depressed before the season starts. I like to save that for when the team finishes on a 2-7 stretch.

They certainly weren't as bad as Vick made them look. Mike Williams is a poor comparison, because we don't have any pre-Lions pro experience to compare with...if he catches on somewhere else we'll be able to judge if his problem was partly Harrington/Kitna.

I'm not saying that the ability to scramble is a bad thing, though when it leads directly to injury I guess you could say it is. What I'm saying is that it's a double-edged sword, and does not mitigate Vick's poor passing, inability to read defenses, lack of leadership, etc. His pros (the occasional highlight scramble) are outweighed by his cons (all the rest).

Let's talk about the lineage of scrambling QBs in the "modern" NFL. Cunningham...Elway...Young...McNabb. None of them really accomplished jack in terms of post-season payoff until they learned to temper their scrambling with above-average play from the pocket. Vick has shown no ability or willingness to make that transformation. In addition, those guys I mentioned did not make a habit of embarrassing themselves off-field, a quality that elevated their status as leaders.

Vick is a freakshow. And yeah, it's fun to go to the freakshow once in awhile. But the freakshow isn't something you want to look at every day (or gameday), and it's not going to get you to the promised land. A team's QB is its leader, he sets the tone and blazes the trail towards a championship...so yes, I think it's fair to put more expectation and responsibility for the failures of Atlanta on Vick's shoulders than on other players. Want to play QB? Want to make $130 million? Then you've got to lead.

You make really good points about him being average, and I agree with you. All I'm saying is that Michael Vick is not the reason the Falcons suck. Their D is terrible. They went out and got John "What? You Want Me To Play 16 Games?" Abraham and thought that would solve things last year. The secondary got torched. The run defense was terrible a lot of the time.

Unfortunately that uncertainty also effects his teammates and coaches as they don't know what the hell he's going to do. Which in the end leads to injuries, etc. because he holds the ball to long (protection breaks down) or trys to bail out and run (and pulls hamstrings or gets whacked by linebackers).

One of the things I learned playing sports in college...consistency is HUGE. You have to be a consistent player at your position in order to enable the team (any team, any sport) to succeed. The occasional highligh play, while it looks great, does not make up for overall sub-par play.

It's time to stop making excuses for Vick. One of the most common ones I hear is bitching about his receivers. Well, I've got two points I'd like to make with respect to that:

1. They all seemed to be pretty decent players before they started playing with Vick.

2. What they all have in common is that they suddenly got "bad" when they started playing with Vick.

Vick is a tremendous athelete, I will never debate that. But pure athletic ability does not make a good QB...there are mental, emotional and leadership qualites required by that position that Vick does not possess.

*Another thing I learned in college...teams (front office...coach, GM, owner, etc.) have a very hard time admitting mistakes. Let's say you've got two players...one you recruited highly and gave a full ride to and a walk-on (or a #1 draft pick and an afterthought backup). And what you notice is that the walk-on/afterthought is actually playing better than the prized recruit/#1 draft pick. Logic would dictate that you play the walk-on/backup, right? But that's often not how it works, because ego gets in the way. Front offices do not like to admit that their talent evaluation sucks. So they'll continue to play the prized recruit/#1 pick despite all evidence that the other guy should play...because they don't want people questioning their smarts (huge contract) or ability to judge talent. The guy isn't one of the better passers in the league. He's actually pretty average. But he's the best version of an average passer that you're going to find in this league, mostly because when he is on target, the ball is thrown perfectly. Oh, and pretty damn hard. What the other average QBs don't have, however, is the ability to put up another 800+ yards on the ground every year.

So to think that Michael Vick alone is the reason the Falcons arent winning is just stupid. You can thank ESPN for the hype, and the reason everyone expected so much of him, but the fact is that he's still better than the majority of the QBs in the league.

My favorite is Bergen County, NJ. Liquor stores have to be closed on Sunday, but bars do not, so there are places that are a combination of the two. And the kind of guy that's in a place like that on Sunday afternoon is just not the sort of person you want to spend your day with.

Secondly, while GHABBY may not be a Masshole and it was a mistake to direct the post at him, what Supermike said in that long post WAS EXACTLY RIGHT. He was just sick of being lumped in with the "yahdood" Masshole stereotype because he was a vocal supporter of Boston teams.

Honestly, sometimes I too feel that way on here. There are many more anti-Boston posts than not, and the Simmons backlash is not an excuse for their pervasiveness. People like BDD just have an irrational hatred of everything Boston, and they deserve some of what they get.

It's recently opened at the site of the former Gil's Espresso Bongo Lounge (its original name, in '94; by '97 or '98, I think, it was just Gil's Cafe), & it has the best beer list in the city, to my experience.

Trocadero is also well-regarded, & possibly shares the same ownership as Hollander.

Nomad, Bremen Cafe (don't be fooled... it has beer/other alcohols), & Brit Inn (get it?) have trivia nites on various evenings. (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, in that order, I believe.)

You can score cocaine "with a quickness" at the Uptowner, or take in bar-league volleyball at the Trax, down the street from the UT.

By the way, all of this is not downtown, but very near downtown.
