@klemmer35: Oh, and I am as qualified as Betteman to run the league. Hell, I had 'Hawks season tix. I am not sure he ever watched hockey before leaving the NBA, and often wonder if he has watched it since.

And then the NHL BoG (allegedly) contacted the President of Texas Motor Speedway to take control if/when Betteman left. He denied it, but the story did have quite the life for awhile.

Gossage is a wonderful promoter for TMS, but that's a few events a year, not the head of a league. But what a way to continue to shoot themselves in the foot had it come to pass.

@Spirit of 76: I watched the '04 Finals... I was living in Tampa at the time. That Lightning team was a fun team to watch... especially against the Flames.

I honestly think that the NHL needs to be back on ESPN. Having at least ten games a year to accidentally watch really gets the interest up for the playoffs.

@PQ Crash: I believe this is the one area the lockout fucked up on. One of the common complaints from Canadian teams was that since all salaries are paid in US dollars, they couldn't keep up with the exchange rate. When it flipped, I think the league should have set a standard conversion rate, possibly revisted every so many years, and the difference would be paid to the league for holding. When the fx changes again, the funds are paid to the teams to assist in meeting payroll shortcomings to exchange rate gaps.

Most Canadian fans think I am an idiot for this, for what it is worth. But I think it would impose some cost certainty.

@CardinalRedOctober: The problem for many casual fans continues to be the speed of the puck, which is, ironically, one of the things of beauty for watching live. But you are correct - in HD the game is even better.

Unless has changed this year, the Anaheim fans could not watch on TV, for the cable franchise doesn't carry versus, and versus has exclusivity.

Dallas fans support that team quite well, and there is a hockey boom there. Keep them.

Hockey on HD is incredible, but they need more than one camera in the 300s covering the whole sheet. You get no concept of the speed in the game from up there. The closeups are just like what I see from the crease...

One of you guys will have to hit Snorgette for me. She doesn't meet the (age/2)+7 rule for me. :( Speaking of that, where have her ads gone?

One of the two or three greatest sporting events I have attended in my life was a Flyers playoff game in '04 against the Leafs. Primeau notched a hat trick, and the crowd chased Belfour from the crease midway through the second. It's memories like these that make me lament the downfall of hockey. Although nobody watched them, the '04 and '06 Cup Finals were spectacular specimens of hockey.

And I really don't like Kansas City, but I do think an NHL team could work there. It's cold and there's nothing to do in the winter after the NFL season is over.

I like hockey. When we first got cable back in '96, the 1st thing I watched was a Blackhawk-Maple Leaf game on ESPN. Now that the majority of it is on Versus, only the diehard fans can watch. And with Anaheim dusting Ottawa in 5 games, the NHL could have went toe-to-toe with the NBA because the Finals are awful.

At the time, players who signed a contract with a US team were paid in USD, even if they were traded to a Canadian team. With the difference in beaver bucks and the USD, there was no way "small" Canadian markets could compete fairly.

By the way, it was awesome that Dusty Rhodes was on tonight. He hosts a charity karaoke contest (for MDA) at a few of the local dive bars down here. My old roommates (who had a radio show at the time) were invited to be judges, and I hung out the night he was down there for the semi-finals.

Later he was speaking to the crowd, he pulls out his cell phone and says, "Guess what everybody... I've got David Allan Coe on the line, and he's donating (X amount of money... don't remember how much)."

I think it's awesome that Dusty Rhodes and David Allan Coe have each others' cell phone numbers.

@Hank Scorpio: That sounds like the massive HR database project that went on at Georgetown in the mid- to late-1990s. They were rolling out one HR system but by the time it was ready to go into production it was 3 or 4 years out of date. I think they switched to Peoplesoft and for all I know they're still working on it 10 years later.
