I know I'm way late, but the HOPE is not a free ride.

If you graduate from a Georgia high school with a 3.0 average and go to a state school you get free tuition as long as you maintain that 3.0, if you go to a state private school you get some of the money.

it does not cover room and board or the meal plan etc etc.

The State of Georgia has the Hope Opportunity Scholars Program; the State of Florida has Bright Futures. I don't know the exact numbers for Georgia, but in Florida, a 3.5 weighted GPA in high school with a 1270 or above on the SAT gets full tuition to any public university (about $4000/year); a weighted 3.0 with an, excuse me, freaking pathetic 970 or above on the SAT gets 75% of tuition.

There's another level for vocational schools.

Over 95% of Florida public university students receive some form of free tuition from the State; it's helping bankrupt the university system.

Yeah...sure sounds like Ihateyourteam team was referencing the Hope Scholarship in Georgia. And if that's the case, there were a lot of details left out. For example, that you have to graduate from a Georgia high school with a good GPA and then maintain that GPA each semester to receive that funding. And it's not a full ride...it pays for your tuition and $150/semester for books. So that leaves you with your room and board and the other 80% of your book costs for the semester. Also, I'm not sure why he was making it sound like a rule rather than an exception...it's obviously not widely practiced throughout the country.

And why so afraid to just say Georgia Tech?

And you have to qualify for that before you go to school, and have a 3.0 to maintain it, not everyone who gets a 3.0 receives it. You don't get it simply for doing well in school.

What it comes down to is that there are some athletes who want money so they can "dress fly" and have a "hot whip" There are some who just need it to survive.

I am not one of those idiots who thinks college athletes should be making hundreds of thousands of dollars to play a sport. I am someone who feels that we do not have the opportunity to support ourselves any other way while we are at school. Again, we were not allowed to have jobs. You can have any job you want while in school.

You don't need to feel bad for anyone, but you shouldn't be ignorant of issues.

@Zach Parise's Shorty: I would only assume that in a logical conversation with someone bitching about how athletes want to be compensated above and beyond the free education that the receive for their time on the field. The person complaining about that would not be complaining if they also were receiving a free education just for being a good student.

Does the fact that I helped make a ton of money for my university and graduated with a 3.5 mean that I should have the same compensation as someone who did nothing but graduate with a 3.5? Should I be given a second free education because I had athletic talent and a brain?

I don't know. Again, I was lucky to not need extra cash. There are a ton of athletes without the opportunity to survive at school because they have no money and are not allowed to make money any other way.

I just think the system is flawed, and a lot of non athletes bitch because they don't understand.

Believe me I heard this shit all the time when I played ball because I actually hung around some people who could spell their name and tie their shoes. They always would talk about how it was unfair that we had special treatment and blah blah blah. All the while each one of them had a free ride because they had over a 3.0

I could get a 3.0 in college by literally just putting ink on my balls and slamming them onto the test paper. If you can't maintain a 3.0 you should just drop out and shoot yourself in the face.

I believe another stiulation was that you had to attend a school in the state you lived in.
