My ex left me for my then-best friend, and I found out later that they'd been talking while we were breaking up.

This girl also thinks I raped her (patently untrue, and about as ludicrous a thing I've ever heard, considering the most we ever did was a bit of finger-wetting, initiated by her) and won't even talk to me now.

But I have it on a reliable source that the boyfriend she has now is constantly fantasizing during sex (and tells her) and that he's been unable to help her fully enjoy herself. I'm petty, sure, but that made my day when the source informed me.

Also, on the Rockette front: she's the kind of girl who believes in responsibility enough/is so paranoid that one of our mornings this break was spent going to the health department for STD testing despite the fact we were each other's first and only experience.

This is my girlfriend.

I know the probability of finding someone worth spending my life, or a large share of it, is astronomically low.

I know this is probably a bump. But it's a big one.

I know "compromise" as it has happened in our relationship usually requires me caving. I vow it won't be the same this time.

But she's so many little things that don't even come to mind until the moment they make my heart skip a beat or two. And she would be a fantastic wife and mother, and I, ass-backwardsly future-thinking as I am, would love her to be the first for me and the latter for my children.

Thanks to all of you for this help; it's appreciated, even if I don't agree with all of it, because I always appreciate other perspectives.

Like many others have said, I have completely sabotaged and self-destructed past relationships, including the one with my first ex-fiancee in a situation spot-on to yours (going off to college). The likelihood of you having found "the one" at a young age is low. Add on top of that the likelihood that something so long distance will survive is also less than optimal. As great as she is (and I honestly believe she probably is a great gal from your description), you probably need to let this one go so you (and she), can move on with your lives and experience all the random sex and drunken debauchery that college has to offer.

And, while home for just two weeks, she complains that her "friends" (mostly the crew we've been part of for years and years, all of whom, save her, go to Florida schools and see each other every so often) don't care about her, then makes no effort to organize some way to see them and clings to me.

It's been frustrating of late.

You're both young. Are you both in college? There's no need to focus on her being "The One" at this point. Also, I don't believe there's only one person who's your only soulmate, but that's me.

If she's 18, she's probably not that experienced sexually. She's still figuring out what turns her on and what turns you on. Give her time to learn and understand herself and you, and I bet that aspect of your relationship will improve.

Long distance relationships are difficult, especially at your age. I can only think of one or two people from college who had LDRs that lasted more than a few months. Most of them broke up and found someone local.

Please take all of my comments with a big grain of salt. I'm a divorced 34-year-old guy with some jaded views on love and dating. Yes, I have a girlfriend and I'm really amazingly happy with her, but I'm aware that it's precious and vulnerable and might not last.

First off, sorry for the space there; I gotta clean up my HTML skillz.

...but we pinpointed yesterday (meaning Wednesday) as D-Day, for defusal of tensions, as she was leaving today.

Then we figured out we couldn't hotel (well, motel, really) in the afternoon. Then we happened upon time at her house. Then, once more, I failed to follow through, though she was able to rejoice in two different ways.

I mentioned to her that we could go that night, after dinner; her parents set no time for her to come home (usually, she gets them to set one, because she needs rules and endings like that).

And then she called a friend and we went over to a house wherein I was the only straight male (four girls, including the Rockette, and one bisexual guy), and watched "National Treasure." There was also crocheting, showing of Facebook pictures of "cute guys," and hair straightening. It was wonderful.

I was pissed. She gave her reason as "I'm really sore," which was likely true...but is something she's worked through before.

And now she's gone until the second week of March, when I will be paying to go see her at school, or until Valentine's, when I might surprise her.

And while I know, somewhere in my heart of hearts, that's she's probably The One, I can't help but be hurt (there were other communication breakdowns over this break, and last night featured admissions of selfishness and promises to change that I have heard before) and a little wary of loving her with all my heart again.

I gave up on being oblique.

She's basically the perfect girlfriend outside the bedroom. She drives me everywhere when we're home (I have no car, no license; she doesn't particularly like driving and frequently has to feud with a sister to get a car, but she gets me everywhere), is almost always happy to be with me, and is understanding of my foibles. She hates video games and doesn't understand sports and/or hip-hop, but she's slowly coming around to all three of them.

And I've already mentioned that she's brilliant, witty, kind, and, to my eyes, gorgeous.

But we have problems finding time to ourselves for recreational activities because we both come from larger families with stay-at-home moms; when houses vacate, she freaks out and can't be comfortable with doing anything.

So I flew up for her Fall Break, on my own dime and missing class to do so (I'm lucky; I can afford both), and we found a hotel close to home that rents to 18-year-olds (she is), and have made use of it.

But while she is frequently and sufficiently satisfied...I haven't been. (I mean this literally.) This came to critical mass this break, when one longish evening at the hotel (which we don't stay overnight at, because she worries about getting caught and can't bring herself to make up a story about staying at a girlfriend's house) ended with me frustrated, and we vowed to try again...

Also, to whoever mentioned both Edwards and Obama using U2 for their rallies...

Edwards is playing "Pride (In the Name of Love)," their first big hit, which is about MLK, Jr.'s assassination.

Obama is playing "City of Blinding Lights," a slept-on favorite of mine from their Grammy-winning "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," on which Edge recycles the spiraling intro from "Where the Streets Have No Name." It's ostensibly about Bono first visiting New York after 9/11.

Neither song really fits the candidate, I guess, though I think Obama's comes off as less a ploy; "One" would be the obvious choice for his campaign, though, and, despite its somber tone, that obviously superior and appropriate song's existence is very hard to ignore in this instance.

The winner gets to play "Beautiful Day" on Election Day, if it's one of those two.

But I'd vote for someone who played this ([www.youtube.com]) at a rally. Still one of the most powerful live performances I've seen on YouTube.

Still haven't written that blog. And I still have to wait until the 2 AM Skype call to talk to my Albuquerque-bound girl. And I'm still not sure I won't get mad when I see her.

But, somehow, "I'm not sure I love you" dropped from my lips mid-goodbye hug, and, though I did a bit of backpedaling in the subsequent moments, I'm neither dead nor Rockette-less.

She wasn't mad, and she wasn't confused, because, well, I said something blunt. She was hurt, like I'd been hurt, despite me being nothing less than honest with her.

But she called me from the noisy Orlando airport to talk about it. And I feel immeasurably better now, without a lot of the pressure we'd been under.

I think she's a keeper. A for-life, 'til-Rogaine, even-if-our-children-go-to-Florida-State... keeper.

And I think I love her.

I'm a 31x30, which is even worse. Macy's Herald Square is the one place I can reliably find Dockers.

@StevePerryPsychOut: Yeah, the daily running on concrete probably did the most damage there (beside the tackle). I had to stop running outside because of knee pain. Now I do all my non-sports running in the treadmill. It also helps that I'm not running every day, instead alternating between the treadmill and the stationary bike.

@Hank Scorpio: Funny, I've never seen the Champion ones at Costco. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

@Becky_MI: I can find pants (khakis, jeans, etc.) on occasion if I look really hard. They need to be at least 36 in length, otherwise they look like a pair of shorts. Sometimes I have to settle for buying a bigger waist than 34, but hey, that's why baby Jesus invented belts. I do buy mostly T-shirts and button up shirts there. Since I roll up the sleeves, I don't need to have them be my exact arm length.

I got us the complete football follies collection for christmas, and we watched the first volume tonight. At the end of the original follies vid, there's a shot of a woman entering a stadium. The camera zooms in on her, then zooms directly onto her breasts so they fill the screen, and holds there for a few seconds. For reals, yo. Mrs. Mancini and I exchanged highly incredulous looks.
