I read the Gelf article. I love how Shanoff portrays his Deadspin experience as him just innocently talking football, and the rabid, insane Deadspin commenters going haywire on him. Like he wasn't the paid equivalent of a message board troll. "I can't believe how those crazy fans just jumped all over little ol' me."

Ditching one's alma mater, which provided "the greatest season of my life as a fan," for a more successful team, is incredibly weak, but perhaps forgivable. Shanoff's problem is that he won't forgive himself, and overcompensates to obnoxious levels.

Really, you're losing USC, Ohio State, Michigan, and then a string of 3-4 other schools that rotate from being "decent" to "crapping the bed in out-of-conference games".

Let the Pac-10 and Big 10 fade into football obscurity, just like the Ivy League has. It won't mean one bit of difference if you have some 12-0 USC team voted #1 by the media if the rest of D-IA sorts it out on the field and they get a real trophy from the NCAA like every other sport.
