Bloggers are wannabe journalists. All the Gawker editors (e. spiers, doree, balk, emily) and a good chunk of the writers on this site (Leitch, MJD) have all used these blogs as a platform to launch a traditional, journalistic career, replete with hack jobs for b.s. magazines and rushjob "book" publications with numbers pumped up through incestuous articles published by their friends and editors who owe them favors. (For example, David Hirshey, an editor who greenlit Will's books who also mysteriously gets to write about the English Premier League on this site).

I'm not saying that it's all shite, because I love most of it and probably spend 65% of my "news" viewing time to blogs. But let's be honest here. Will is not Kige Ramsey and Bill Simmons is not very different than Mariucci.

I don't know about you, but my journalism professor made it very clear to me that ethics in the profession were inherently muddled by the fact that no one hands out a license to practice journalism, distinguishing it from law, medicine, the priesthood and the rest of the "professions". Drudge went over this ground ten years ago when he broke the Monica scandal and you're JUST NOW figuring it out and inventing a spurious distinction between "bloggers" and "journalists"???

Let me put it to you in a very simple question: why would Will feel the need to apologize today to Stephen A. Smith if he weren't bound by some rules of the "journalistic" "profession"? The answer is that he was so obliged because he's a journalist. And he's subject to the same rules as Woody Paige and Scott Van Pelt. The sooner you admit it the better.
