My Barnes and Noble put on about 10 book signings/public readings while I was there and the attendance was always anemic.

This one looks rather VIPish. Podium and table. Introduction by store representative. I bet they also made an announcement over the speaker, too.

We've set up authors with a card table and a spot in a corner before. It was really sad.

eg. "Who wrote Dante's Inferno?" "Do you have any books by Sherlock Holmes?" "What does this used label mean?"

And my personal favorite, "This might be a redundant question, but where is the children's section?"

At least I'm assuming that the people coming into my store with this questions are doing it as a prank.
