I think your anger is unwarranted. As of a year ago, there were 34.5 million blogs and 75,000 new weblogs posted each day. Surely that number has grown even more since then.

I am confident to say that this website is the exception rather than the rule. Most blogs are garbage. Perhaps he meant those; perhaps he was focusing more on the larger problem of all those forums and commenters. Have you ever read the Cardinals forum on stltoday.com? Awful. I imagine that is why you make commenters audition.

He also talked about sports radio, which is terrible. Have you ever heard the people calling in on Fox Sports Radio? Awful as well.

Don't take vague generalizations so personally. Sheesh. (But Cuban can f*** off.)

These are two completely different critiques of the blogging community. "Insight" is critical of talent; "responsibility" is a slam on professionalism. I'll also add that I had a chance to meet Costas in a professional capacity just a few months ago. First of all, the guy is about as tall as a Smurf, and I wonder if perhaps he's got a Napoleonic complex. But beyond that he treated me with a fair amount of respect, as I was introduced to him as a book editor and as the guy who acquired and edited one of his esteemed colleagues' books. I'm fairly certain that the encounter would have gone differently if I told him I was a blogger. It appears that Bob is all about credibility, which these days is pretty much all he has.

I really think this is just a generational thing. Costas isn't THAT old, but at 56 he is old enough to not quite fully grasp the power of the internet. Plus, I also feel like talking heads like Costas feels threatened by this "new media," because it's something he can't control. Blogs may grant a voice to idiotic blowhards, but they also make it so you don't have to have a degree from the S.I.
