A-Rod's biggest problem with the Rangers contract is that it made him not only the highest paid player in the game, it did so in such a way that no one could touch the amount of money he was making. Non-fans and casual fans would hear $252 million and think that no person is worth that for playing a game, and fans would wonder if he was really worth it. He was the lightning rod for the economics of the game, providing cover for other players who lacked the same statistical backing to make large sums of money without becoming public enemy #1. No one came along and knocked him off the highest paid perch, they just knew he was making $252 million on this contract and he was the highest paid player in the game. Tom Hicks so blew the salary structure that it made A-Rod a long-term target.
