As for your extracurricular activity dilemma, I went to private school where not going to college was not an option, so in addition to taking honors/AP classes everyone did two or three sports and half a dozen clubs. I was one of the "indoor" kids. I managed the soccer and swim teams (which got me out of gym class) and did crew in the spring, but I was the head of the chorus, my high school a cappella group, and the music appreciation society.

Still didn't help me get into the college I wanted to go to.

@Yostal: the most effective thing we did for club control in student council (you had to be in at least 1 other club to be in student council) was replace homecoming floats with homecoming hallways. people freaked, we told them if they were a part of student council they would have known about this, and the next year we had record club membership. we still don't do homecoming floats, but it got everyone involved.

But sports participation is at record highs the past couple of years while non-sporting co-curricular participation is way down from levels. So I proposed this meeting to a). give kids a chance to feel like they have a voice, b). see something that we (as adults) might be missing, and c). look at the future of our programs, ie is this a new normal, or just a lull.

Then again, I was the unathletic one in high school by overcompensated by doing everything else, so I could be blinded by my own past.

@lisa: Nah, I'm enjoying my Spring Break while I gear up for a student "town hall" on why co-curricular participation is at record lows of late. I'm willing to accept that there's going to be a lot I don't want to hear at that meeting, but I also accept that if we don't have the meeting, we may never actually know what the problem(s) is/are.
