And Bush said that it really wasn't. The job he'd really wanted and that made him most excited when he thought about it was Commissioner of Major League Baseball, and that had he been offered that job he would never have entered into politics at all.

I've thought about that interview a lot in the last 7 years and realized that Bush would have probably made an excellent Commissioner. He really only has one true talent and that is in convincing other wealthy people to part with their money. That's how he handled being managing partner of the Rangers and it is the one thing he did successfully in his other business ventures before that. If you think about it, the biggest problem in baseball right now is two camps of greedy rich people who refuse to give ground - players and owners.

For baseball to survive and thrive the owners need to stop regarding the players as the enemy and work with them as partners, and the players need to realize that ever enlargement of their salaries only damages the sport. Basically, the two sides have to set aside their greed if the game is going to continue. Dubya might be able to do that. Selig sure as hell can't.

I once saw his father, while in office, get smacked in the face with a give-away glove at a Frederick Keys minor league game. He apparently decided to come down at the last minute from Camp David and attend a game. Thanks to his appearance security was a bitch and the lines took forever.

He was just sitting in his box for the first couple innings, talking to the people in the next box (us) and signing autographs. After the third the announcers officially welcomed him and he leaned over the edge of the box and waved. Bam, right in the kisser with a glove from the lower deck.

The guy claimed he was tossing it up to get an autograph. Still one of the funnier things Ive ever seen.
