It's funny how everyone started talking about how Memphis' supposed Achilles heel, the free throw issue, had miraculously vanished in the tournament. And then, lo and behold, it reared its ugly head at the worst possible time for them. Ouch.

This has to be one of the toughest losses ever because of how many chances Memphis had to ice it. All those missed free throws down the stretch, that three-pointer that was reviewed and changed to a two... rough.

I'm still comprehending last night's insanity. Downtown Lawrence was amazing. So much/many: vomiting, drunk people, nudity, people passed out on sidewalks, walking over cars, cops drinking, a few fights, enough high-fiving to make your hands hurt, etc. Unbelievable. Nice to stand in solidarity with PeteJayhawk, Tater, Bowie 1980, etc.

As for last night's game, I think that Memphis sealed their fate during the introductions when their team was announced and everyone was wearing a different warmup top. You cannot taunt the uniform gods like that.

Kansas even tried to help them in the last 30 seconds. Going for the layup with 25 seconds left and getting it block and also allowing Memphis to rebound the missed free throw with 16 seconds left and thus providing them another chance to put it away.

I can't remember a team choking that bad in a national championship game. Not just the free throws, but the idiotic foul by Dorsey, not fouling at the end of regulation. It just seemed like Memphis thought they were going to win and got complacent.

Calipari's remark elicited laughter from the news media because Memphis (35-1) finished the game 15 of 32 from the free-throw line (46.9 percent). The Tigers entered the game shooting 59.7 percent from the line.

Mississippi State (23-11) made 14 of 20 free-throw attempts (70 percent). The Bulldogs had a game-high 21 points from Gordon, a junior guard.
