Really, my daily blog route is pretty short, and almost exclusively sports related. I tend to read more "traditional" sites for other stuff. That said, it starts at (and frequently returns to) Deadspin. I venture off to Fire Joe Morgan and Awful Announcing for the funny and the media critiquing. Around tournament time this year I got hooked on Vegas Watch, mostly for the educational factor as I don't gamble but am statistically inclined. I also take occasional detours off to Melt Your Face Off, KSK, the Ladies..., etc. Aside from those, I mostly use the Blogdome to find me interesting articles.

Oh, and of course I make sure to get my daily dose of LOLcats...

And I read the columnists, too; mine, for sports, at home are the Florida Today's Peter Kerasotis and the Orlando Sentinel's Mike Bianchi and David Whitley.

But as I've grown, I've realized they tend towards bombast for bombast's sake, increasingly in recent years. If I want that, I want it without the filter of copy editors and AP trappings; the Internet's perfect for that.

I was at a national summit about teen journalism in 2005; the editors of papers from coast to coast asked us about the future of teen journalism, and specifically online presence. And while we all knew that the future was about the Internet horning in on old media's turf, and said as much.

But I'm not sure everyone heard, or understood. I think traditional media weren't ready for the Fox News-ization of the world, the Deadspin-ization that gives everyone a pundit's platform to bellow from, and they're lashing out at those they think should have shorter platforms and quieter microphones.

And, yeah, we're talking across each other. But that's okay.

What blogs do you read daily and trust? For me, it's Deadspin and TBL, with excursions to things like Ladies..., KSK, EDSBS (especially during the fall) and a few other sites for music, video games, and pop culture.

I just don't see why we have to involve ourselves in a debate with other media. It really does feel, like someone mentioned earlier, as if traditional media feels their raison d'être - that they are the opinion providers - is slipping away and that they need to preserve what they had rather than embrace what's new. Unfortunately for them, just as anyone can publish music with relative ease, anyone can also publish their opinion. If people like what they hear, they'll be back for more. The publisher isn't as important as major labels or major media would like to believe.

I agree about the little meat on the bones thing; that's why I put in the time and effort that I do on my posts and usually end up with thousands of words, with proper links and as painstaking research as I can muster.

I don't know if this was discussed in DUAN or on another site, but one site I read often is Lion in Oil, which you can find the URL for pretty easily. The thing is, you could probably read most of it by reading Blogdome; it gets linked to very frequently.

But it doesn't post daily, and, when it does post, usually has a longer riff or story to go on.

I think of it as a "boutique" blog; it's something like a New Yorker of the sports blogging community, with a little bit of criticism, a good bit of skepticism, and a lot bit of effort.

We need more of those, and that's what yours wants to be, certainly, and what I hope mine becomes, too.

Just in case someone reads this tomorrow and wonders--I read deadspin and thebiglead often, and like most of the content. But I just wish that there was more meat to some of their articles than what I'm getting right now. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but maybe that minority isn't as small as people think.

The University of South Florida was so taken by me that the president of the university called me personally to tell me that, if I wanted to do sports journalism there, their AD was good friends with Costas and could set something up. (Sorry for bragging; I just know my life will never be that cool again, so...)

But I chose to go to UF for other reasons, and my Deadspin fix turned into a commenter account, which spurred me to get a blog.

And since, I've found the mix of good writing and strong opinion in the blogosphere to be more than anyone will ever get from the MSM.

If you find the great stuff, you're going to love it; if you don't right away, you may end up tossing it aside.

And that's sad. To judge Blogfrica by one dick joke from Balls Deep or by the pictures in the roundups on With Leather is to only take the middle of the glass. The bottom is, for the most part, sludge, but it's easily avoidable if you recognize it's not the best.

The top is the creme de la creme.

For all the Deadspins, FJMs, EDSBSes, et. al., there are hundreds of crappy Blogspot blogs that are just some dude in his underwear taking poorly written potshots at something or another. Those guys don't represent what's really going on in the world of blogging anymore than a 'zine represents the world of journalism.

In the end, blogs are in many ways just like any other media. If you do it badly, no one will follow you. If you do it well, people will. Will does it well, and I don't see why he should even have to be involved in any debate. Is Will a journalist, in the traditional sense? Maybe not. Does it matter? (Tens of? Hundreds of?) Thousands of people read and respond to his opinions every day, so I'd say no. All those people - all of us - find Will to be a credible writer. That Costas or Bissinger or anyone else don't is nothing but a loss for them.
