One mans opinion of what happened, one mans opinion of what player was the mvp, one mans opinion of what plays were the factors of deciding the game! wow, what bullshit! Sometimes I wondered what fucking game was this complete idiot watching. Then it hit me, his story is biased for what team he likes, who his favorite players are, how he feels the game should be played! The internet changed all of that giving everbody their own sports column, good, bad, ugly, etc. I no longer have to value only one mans opinion because he's an "accomplished writer". I get to read and decide what I agree with, what I don't and most important of all, comment back on everthing I feel relevent and worthy. It's not one mans opinion, my opinion, your opinion that matters "BUZZ", It's everybodys. Thats what makes it real!

First, the long-time journalist acted out like the worst offenders that he claimed make blogging horrible.

A note: Blog comments capture the very same comments that previously were only uttered or thought. Readers of newspapers, when they gather and discuss, make comments so similar to what we now see on blogs. Some are insightful, some funny for funny's sake and some are stupid. To all the mighty crafters of newspaper articles, get some perspective. People can react and will react as they want to.

The worthy points to consider between web and traditional media are as follows:

1. Speed. We can now have a community discussion during a game that is broader than previous. We don't have to wait for printing presses. Web sites at newspapers can do this already. So really this isn't a differentiator.

2. Perspective/Access. Bloggers that write from home while watching a game on TV represent that majority experience. It deserves a voice. If the blogger is compelling people will read it and return. If not it becomes a personal journal or diary: important to the individual and that's about it.

The traditional reporter has exclusive access and the opportunity for news breaking that bloggers wouldn't necessarily. This appeals to enthusiasts mainly. Contract negotiations, DUI's, gun play, injuries, stadium developments, seem to be the "breaking" news that we get from traditional writers. It deserves attention. It also appeals to a far more limited amount of the public than the actual sporting events.

3. Unfiltered opinions. Writers have editors. Publishers have advertisers. Advertisers want numbers. This chain has guided, buffered, refined and defined the information that made it to print. This relys on the end-product being relevant.

Bloggers have almost no barrier to entry to the public. No filters, no advertisers to answer to, etc. Of course if they want to be able to earn a living then they to must rely on the end-product being relevant.

In the end it comes down to a public that appreciates the product. If it is sensationalism, expose and other "gross" type topics, if it invades privacy and is impolite it is only meaningful if the reader rates it as relevant.

It isn't a new venue. When the dude next to me calls a player a jerk I can believe him or not. I can choose to sit next to him again, or not. When the blog does this I can do the same. When the newspaper stops being relevant I can cancel my subscription.

If Bloggers and the internet are as bad as reported, unknowingly, I would have assumed he was the angry working man in the basement in his underwear writing about sports. I would have assumed Mr. Leitch to be the college educated writer. I think there was a real sense of elitism by everyone else on the panel to assume that they "know better" because they are at the event. Well, it's there job then to report it, just the facts, but not to tell us how to feel about it?
Oh and more from the Costas show about the networks and the leagues being tied together...I don't think they mute the announcers, but they do cooperate on some level - otherwise whenever there's a fight, we'd see the whole thing. The NFL coverage is often cut away or they won't show an entire altercation. Why wouldn't we want to see that if we should experience being there like the real reporters?
As for photos getting posted of athletes, they're just going to have to deal with the fact that with that kind of money and fame, they're now in the league of celebrities. It may be undeserved, but that's just the reality, so don't cry about it - just be smart about it.
This is my first visit to this site, thanks to Costas Now, I'll likely tune in here more often for the "unreported" news in sports. I have a lot of respect for Costas, but in this piece he's participating on the fringe himself of what he criticizes. One thing that was lost in all the commentary is why do we, mostly men, tune into sports? The reality is that in our day to day life filled with jobs and bosses and girlfriends or wives, we try to behave (hopefully most of us do) with some composure, respect and professionalism. Sports for me is the release and outlet from all that control. It's the one place we don't have to worry about what others will think. Sports is the place we can yell and get mad without censoring ourselves. So that while I have respect for Andruw Jones, now of the Dodgers, I can yell and be pissed off at him when he strikes out again, with the bases loaded and 1 out. I've got nothing against the guy, but I do think the Dodgers paid too much for him, but that's just my opinion and I hope he proves me wrong. I digress, but the point of sports is that this is our outlet to scream at the tv, or here on a blog to yell and scream. Nobody else has to listen, I know Andruw Jones can't hear me, thankfully, but it just feels good to yell at him at home in front of the TV, or to write about it here. Because I know others feel the same way. If we can't yell and scream about things that piss us off in sports, then what last bastion is there for us guys?
Okay, I've spoken my peace on this, now I'll just go back and watch the Dodgers play again today, and yes, I will cheer for Andruw Jones to get a hit, because I love the Dodgers and want them to win. But if he keeps striking out you may just be able to hear me scream from LAX across the city. Go Dodgers!

However, these print people in the dinosaur media don't exactly endear themselves with respect by opening a conversation with "You're full of shit." Well, nice to meet you, too, Buzz.

I like Buzz and I respect him as a writer. I grew up reading newspapers and my favorite sportswriter is Peter Gammons. A close second is Peter King. What is it about guys named Peter that are great sportswriters? I don't know but I digress. It's beyond laughable to me to listen to members of the dinosaur media bash bloggers for being inaccurate, mean-spirited, and amateurish among other things.

This coming from the same media that prints all kinds of news stories that later are retracted. "Newsweek" in 2005 reported a story alleging that interrogators at Guantanamo flushed the Koran down a toilet in front of detainees. It never happened. "Newsweek" later retracted the story. Where was the outcry from people like Buzz at that time?

In April 2008 "The LA Times" retracted a story about how P. Diddy aka Puff Daddy aka whatever his name is this week knew in advance that Tupac Shakur would be murdered in 1994. Where was the outcry from people like Buzz at that time? The silence is deafening.

The point I'm trying to make here is that the dinosaur media ought to look at themselves in the mirror. It is no secret that newspaper readership is dropping and there are a number of reasons why. Perceived bias, inaccuracies and alternative forms of media have hurt the newspaper business. And I agree with what mandelion said about immersing in the technology. These people remind me of some of the members of the recording industry who shut down Napster and now they want to shut down iTunes. Well, wait, wasn't Napster about how people were "stealing music" and millionaires like Sheryl Crow and Lars Ulrich weren't receiving financial compensation? Now people have to pay for downloading songs and they're still bitching and moaning about it.

All of these people need to adapt to the modern world. Part of me is sad that the newspaper is in decline. I grew up reading "The Sporting News" back when it looked like a newspaper and covered ALL sports including hockey. Now? It looks like just another sports magazine and has been emasculated from its previous incarnation. And I can go online to read articles and get stats so why would I read the magazine?

There are some bloggers who have too much time on their hands but most of them are good and don't deserve to be talked down to in a elitist tone. It kind of reminds me of something Henry Ford once said, "If I asked my customers what they wanted they would have said to build a bigger horse."

Granted Bissinger's posture was absurd and his profane attack at profanity was very ironically unironic, but he made a few meager concessions to Will.

Here's what I find to be the unspoken subtext of all of this that is so weird that noone, not Costas or Leitch (or Braylon Edwards) brought up. Mainstream sports reporters have been doing a shitty job of reporting the "real story" for 70 years now. As, sort of, evidenced by Weintraub, anyone can read a box score (which provides at least 80% of the facts of a game) and write some purple prose that conveys a "mood" of the game. But for 70 years reporters have been ignoring the rest of the story.

No one ever reported that Babe Ruth was hammering chili dogs and chicks in the Red Sox/Yankees dugouts. No one ever reported that Ty Cobb was a dirty player and an insufferable asshole. No one bothered for 50 years to get the real story of Mo Berg or Hank Greenberg. Fuck, even in the 90s, no reporter bothered to report about the rumors of steroids (which everyone watching the game new) or that Barry Bonds is a fucking douche. Braylon Edwards even said that, "we're doing the same things now that players were doing in the 70's." Yeah, well that's why Jim Bouton was ostracized for reporting the real truth of what was going on in major league baseball. No reporter was doing his job.

For God's sake, Costas torpedoed his own argument by holding up "Ernie Pyle" as his bright shining example of journalism. Ernie Fucking Pyle voluntarily filed false stories on behalf of the War Department to get the home front behind the war effort. He was a pretty brave guy, but he wasn't exactly Buzz's type of journalist.

So, while the tone of the debate was a little more subdued than the raving lunacy I was led to believe, I still say "fuck you" to Buzz and Bob for only telling half of the story.

The way I see it, it's already starting to shift towards on demand programming on both television and the internet. CBS' NCAA March Madness audience was down quite a bit, but internet viewership was way up. This has to affect the network's advertising revenue and hence, how they approach sports broadcasting.

I watch a good share of programs from my DVR to avoid commercials. If I miss an episode, I may watch it on the internet. Once there's a decent device that will link internet programming to your television, I think there will be big changes in how we watch television. The internet opens up a whole world of broadcasting to the viewer. Commercial programming (and web-based programming) from around the world available for you to watch when and how you want to watch it. If television folks think their jobs are secure, I think they better think twice. It's a new world.

It's not Deadspin's fault that Leinart was stupid enough to let those photos get out. We build up our athletes to be Gods. Kudos to Deadspin for reminding us that they're mere mortals.

Bissinger takes things too seriously. Just because I've run over 3 hookers with a car I just carjacked in Grand Theft Auto 4 and then taken their money doesn't mean I'd do it in real life. But Buzz is even more misguided than Sony or BMG. He seems to think that people who enjoy Will, or Big Daddy Drew, or AJ and/or the comments to their posts will somehow be injured or made stupid by said posts or comments. A far better writer than Buzz once said, quoting loosely, "If I could really write, if you read it, it would kill you" (WS Burroughs). Well, no one can write like that. Reading Shakespeare doesn't make you smarter. Working with his language, figuring out the syntax, the similes, symbols, et cetera may make you more eloquent and it may even make you smarter. But the reader has to do the work.

And at their best, Will, BDD, AJ and other strong blog writers and commenters make me laugh and think and do some intellectual work. (Not Suss though. Puns = death.) That profanity and athletes being stupid are part of the medium does not change the great inherent value in the messages. That Buzz fails to see this is his problem. That he attacks Will for work hedoesn't value is pedantic and small. Because the Balls Deep post that included Rich Garces' tits was eloquent and powerful. It made the reader work, and it was brilliant.

I am a journalism student, and I want to work in sports journalism as either a writer or in radio, but such events have really made me take a hard look at my decision to pursue such a career. After mulling it over though, I have never been more confident in that decision. Buzz Bissinger is a man on his way out of the game, his failure to embrace the new media in sports, the internet, namely blogs, has insured that he will not be able to continue on down the road as a successful sports writer, as if he ever really was. Buzz calls out the bloggers for harsh attacks on his colleagues from "fans with no media credentials", and their overall lack of journalistic integrity. But what he fails to realize is that he and his fellow writers journalistic integrity has withered so much that these people like Will Leitch, tired of all the nonsense of crummy writing is giving fans a chance to call them on it. We as common sense fans have seen the goodness of sports media fall away, and we want to be able to call those out who are paid to write the stories yet fail to deliver quality material.

As Will said, "The simplest, most obvious emotion that comes when we are faced with what we do not understand is fear, followed quickly by rage". Last night we saw a coward seeing his career mortality in the face of the man taking it away. I really credit Will for taking the high road, something I probably would never had been able to do. But as I continue to learn about how I, as a new age sports writer, can embrace the internet blogs while keeping with bringing the facts to the table. Can look up to a man like Will Leitch, and pity such an example of Buzz Bissinger, a man whose inability to keep up with the times, saw his career to its grave.
