It might not — yet — have the online fanaticism and cachet of baseball, but the NFL and its fans are starting to catch up in the world of team-devoted blogs. To this end, Deadspin salutes these modem-addled souls and proudly presents Blogdom's Best, given to the most outstanding blog for each NFL team. There are fewer than there are for baseball, but they're out there, if you look. If you would like to nominate a blog (yours, even) for selection, just let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org. Today: The Indianapolis Colts.
They've never seen a Super Bowl trophy up close, but Indianapolis Colts fans have no room for complaint. With one of the best quarterbacks ever, an exciting offense year in and year out and this season a defense to match, every day is Christmas here. And that's what it must have felt like on March 30, 1984, when a fleet of Mayflower moving vans rolled into town with all the Baltimore Colts' gear and equipment. Owner Robert Irsay had moved the team to Indianapolis in the middle of the night to prevent the city of Baltimore from seizing it via eminent domain. What a sweet guy.
And so the state of Indiana got the biggest thing to land there in pro football since Jim Thorpe played for the Pine Village Pros in 1913. These days, thoughts are focused not so much on the AFC South — at 7-0, the Colts are running away with it — but on the New England Patriots, who have beaten Indy six straight times, including twice in the playoffs. Colts' blogs, of which there are many, are buzzing over the Monday night matchup — Manning vs. Brady is being hailed as the new Montana vs. Marino. That may be overstating things, especially since Manning is 0-7 lifetime in New England. But then, if you regularly peruse Colts blogs, you knew that. Our picks for the three best:
3. Colts Couch Crew. Just what the name implies — a couple of guys sitting around writing about the Colts, wondering whether to watch this week's game at the local bar, or at home. We love blogs like that.
2. Colt Freaks. News site with good original content and lost of extras.
1. Blue Crew. Come one, come all — if you're gonna ride that undefeated streak, this is the place to do it.
