Alex Rodriguez hit the 661st home run of his career tonight, passing Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time list. Next up ahead of him is Babe Ruth with 714, and then Hank Aaron with 755 and Barry Bonds with 762.
The homer came when Rodriguez smoked a Chris Tillman changeup over the centerfield wall in the third inning of tonight’s 4-3 win over the Orioles. He originally got ahold of a Tillman pitch two innings earlier, but Delmon Young made a nice jumping catch to deny Rodriguez.
If he continues to hit dingers at his current pace, Rodriguez will end the year with somewhere around 690, so we’ll have to wait until next season (at least) to see if he can climb above Babe Ruth in the baseball record book.
