Angels pitcher Jake Jewell, making only the third MLB appearance of his career, suffered a brutal injury on his right ankle Wednesday night while trying to slide into home for a play at the plate with Boston’s J.D. Martinez.

Jewell stayed on the ground for quite some time, and eventually had to be taken off the field in a stretcher. We’ll update as word on his condition becomes available.

Update (6/28, 7:36 p.m.): Jewell will have season-ending surgery to repair a fractured right fibula.
