Well, I’ve been having an aneurysm trying to keep up with all the trades happening in Major League Baseball today and late last night. We here at Deadspin have talked about a few of them already, but it seems like every half hour another impactful trade happens — so we’re rounding up all of the most recent trades that have happened to let you all know exactly what transpired and what they mean for the rest of the league as the deadline finally passes.

Of note, a number of deals were still pending physicals or other assorted t-crossings and i-dottings.

El Mago has struggled mightily in 2021. His best moment came when he got former Pirates’ 1B Will Craig to make one of the worst defensive plays of the 2021 season. He’s been striking out at higher rates than he’s ever experienced, and is currently slashing .248/.292/.484. He certainly hasn’t been the same player he was from 2018-2019 in 2021. Maybe a change of scenery will help, but that’s a BIG maybe. Even with the inclusion of Trevor Williams, shipping away your team’s number five prospect and 2019 first-round pick, Pete Crow-Armstrong, seems a little steep.

I guess it won’t matter though, if the Mets win the World Series.

Verdict: Cubs get a strong return for struggling players

Updated, 4:40 p.m.: The Giants needed to do something to keep up with the moves the Dodgers pulled last night. When all hope was lost by the Bay, the Giants were able to snag the biggest name left on the trade block, former NL MVP Kris Bryant. Best of all, the Giants didn’t even need to give up that much to get him. All that San Fran is sending in exchange for Bryant is OF Alex Canario (SF’s No. 9 prospect) and RHP Caleb Killian (SF’s No. 30 prospect). For someone with as much talent as Kris Bryant, you’d expect the Giants to have to give up at least one of their top-5. That wasn’t the case. This was an absolute fleecing by the Giants.

Verdict: SF knocked this one out of the park.

Kimbrel leads all relief pitchers in ERA this season. Adding him to a bullpen that already includes Liam Hendriks (the league leader in saves), just seems unfair. A strong bullpen is one of the most common attributes to World Series winning teams. The White Sox are building to contend, and the addition of Kimbrel just might make them the new American League favorites. Madrigal is a terrific contact hitter, and will be the Cubs’ starting second baseman as soon as he’s healthy. Heuer, meanwhile, has struggled in 2021 after a phenomenal 2020 campaign. He has potential to be great.

Verdict: White Sox gave up a good amount of talent, but it’s well worth it for Kimbrel

With Scherzer shipped off to Los Angeles (probably?!) last night, Berrios was arguably the top pitcher available. Toronto was in desperate need of pitching help and got it. This was a very solid return for Minnesota as well. Already Marin and Woods Richardson are the Twins’ numbers two and three prospects in their farm system. The Twins are officially in rebuild mode, an unfortunate end to the team’s four-year run where they’d reached the playoffs three times, but never made it past the divisional round.

Verdict: Fair trade. Both teams come out on top

Danny Duffy was a name being overlooked by several people, despite strong stats, because of his inability to stay on the field. Although Duffy is currently on the 10-day IL, he has proven to be an above-average starter when healthy, riding a 2.51 ERA through the 2021 season across 61 innings pitched. Duffy is an expensive lefty for how little he sees the field, and that’s most likely why the Royals were willing to ship him away for little to nothing. With the Dodgers having all the money in the world, this was a no-brainer on their end. Duffy may not end up joining the Dodgers’ rotation, but at the very least, he’s a solid long reliever option for the remainder of the season.

Verdict: Dodgers get a steal

The Nationals and Cubs decided to sell everything and the kitchen sink this deadline. Hand is just two years removed from three consecutive All-Star appearances, and hasn’t been a slouch in 2021 either. You’d think for the guy who led the league in saves in 2020, you’d get more than one top prospect. Riley Adams is good, don’t get me wrong, and is ready to join the big league club right now, but you’d expect to get a little more for someone as proven as Hand.

Verdict: TOR wins, but WAS gets a decent return

Eddie Rosario finished top-20 in AL MVP voting in both 2018 and 2019. Pablo Sandoval has pretty much been a non-factor for the Braves this season. Clearly, this move was a salary dump by Cleveland. (Update: They released him.)

There’s no way in hell they thought this was a fair trade based on talent. It’s just an unfortunate situation of the game. The Cleveland Indians have the least amount of active cash in the league, and therefore couldn’t afford to hold onto someone as talented as Rosario. Atlanta gets a great player to help fill the void that Ronald Acuña Jr.’s injury left. Cleveland gets screwed.

Verdict: Atlanta takes advantage of Cleveland’s money situation

Cubs RHP Ryan Tepera —> White Sox

LHP Bailey Horn —> CHC

Ryan Tepera was the National League’s reliever of the month for May, when he posted a 0.61 ERA across 14.1 innings pitched on only three hits allowed. He hasn’t been as dominant since. The end of June was very rough for him. However, he’s still one of the best set-up men in the league. Now, he joins an already stellar bullpen on the South Side and will most likely be forced into a middle relief role. Bailey Horn has looked good in his limited time in the minors, but it will be a long while before he’s ready to take Wrigley Field.

Verdict: Sox gets the upper hand in this deal.

Marlins OF Adam Duvall —> Atlanta

Marlins OF Adam Duvall —> Atlanta

C Alex Jackson —> MIA

Adam Duvall is a solid power hitter — the kind of guy you like to have in the playoffs, because one swing of the bat could be the difference between elimination and advancing to the next round. As a piece down the final stretch of the regular season, Duvall falls flat. That being said, catcher Alex Jackson hasn’t shown any promise at the dish thus far in his Major League career. In 50 career at-bats, Jackson has just three hits. That’s not so good! But it’s hopefully something the 25-year-old can improve upon under the tutelage of Miami’s coaching staff. He’s a fine defensive catcher (very good at throwing out baserunners), but this is a hitting league. You have to be able to swing it.

Verdict: Atlanta is more than willing to welcome back Duvall

A key addition at the deadline for the 2019 World Champion Washington Nationals, Hudson is part of another deadline deal to a different team facing similar circumstances. The San Diego Padres needed to make some moves to keep up with the Dodgers and Giants. Hudson has been fine this year, but his recent track record isn’t as impressive. Still, he’ll provide a veteran presence on one of the youngest teams in the league and will almost certainly play a factor in whether or not the Padres can make a run at the NL West division title.

Verdict: SD gave up a little too much, but could pay off big time

If there’s one thing the Milwaukee Brewers didn’t need, it was pitching. Starting, relief, specialist, whatever, the Brewers were set. Still, the team went out and acquired Detroit reliever Daniel Norris. Norris showed signs of greatness earlier in his career, but has cooled off over the last five years. Most likely, Norris will be a non-factor in Milwaukee’s bullpen. So, good for Detroit for being able to get something out of Norris. Reese Olson has not been an effective pitcher across his three years (four, if you count 2020), but he’s still young and has time to iron out his mechanics before he’s ready to make an impact for Detroit.

Verdict: Detroit gets decent potential in Olson for someone who only used to have potential

The Mets get Baez. The Phillies get Galvis. Way to keep pace, Philadelphia! (Update: BUT WAIT! They did make another move, and it was a nice one — see below.) This, in itself, is not an impact move. Galvis is a fine player, but he’s not someone who alone gives the Phillies an edge over New York or Atlanta. Buuuut ...

Verdict: Orioles get some decent potential with Burch. They win this trade.

The only 6-player trade today, and it’s composed entirely of right-handed pitchers (what are the odds?). The Phillies were in desperate need of a quality starting pitcher. Kyle Gibson is exactly the man for the job. While his track record isn’t the most impressive, his spectacular 2021 season cannot be understated. Tied for third in the American League in quality starts with 11, Gibson is a machine of consistency. If Aaron Nola can recover from what has been a pretty uncharacteristically poor 2021 season, the Phillies will have a starting staff strong enough to compete with the Mets and Braves. Ian Kennedy is also a serviceable reliever, and definitely strengthens the bullpen.

Verdict: Phillies make big push to greatly improve their team. Rangers get solid prospects. Both teams should walk away from this deal happy.

Image for article titled You get a high-impact player! And YOU get a high-impact player!

Atlanta continues to retool their outfield, which will have almost an entirely new look than it did at the beginning of the season. The addition of Soler is a little questionable seeing as how the Braves traded for a very similar player, Adam Duvall, just a few hours ago. Soler is obviously a huge threat at the plate — having led the American League in home runs in 2019. His power and contact numbers have taken a big hit since then though. Kasey Kalich has been a very solid reliever in High-A ball with Rome recording a 3.26 ERA and five saves in 30.1 innings. Soler will most likely be relegated to a rotational role in Atlanta’s crowded outfield. He’ll most likely serve as a go-to pinch-hitter as well. Not much value for the Braves, but it comes with the potential for Soler to recapture what he had in 2019.

Verdict: Fair trade. Both teams get what they need.

The Angels were in a weird situation. Fourth in their division, but over .500. Should they sell? Should they buy? Well Angels fans can be happy with what they did today — keeping most of their key pieces for a potential playoff run while still gaining some prospects in the process. The Yankees needed to add some starting pitching depth. Lord knows they didn’t need any more hitters after adding Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo over the last 48 hours. That being said, Heaney isn’t exactly the difference maker on the mound Yankees fans were hoping for. Over his last six starts, Heaney has allowed three or more earned runs in five. Throw in the fact that Heaney will be moving from Angel Stadium to the notoriously hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium and you’ve got yourself a pretty “meh” deal for the Yanks.

Verdict: Angels win here, receiving prospects for an underperforming player
