Obscure New Rule Gives Jets An Overtime Win Over The Pats

The Jets were granted a second chance in overtime after Nick Folk missed a 56-yard attempt. Patriots defensive tackle Chris Jones was flagged for a rule instituted this offseason.

Jones crouched behind his teammate and pushed him into the line in an effort to disrupt the kick, and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. It gave the Jets 15 yards and a first down, and Folk kicked a much shorter field goal to win the game. Jones's strategy had no effect on Folk's original attempt.

Mike Pereira, former NFL vice president of officiating, summarized the rule and how it was the right call.
