Steve Masiello To Return To Manhattan After Getting His Degree

Manhattan College announced today that Steve Masiello will return as head coach of the Jaspers as soon as he completes his undergraduate degree. It was that lack of a degree—or, more specifically, that he lied about having one—that torpedoed Masiello's move to USF.

"I am extremely grateful and humbled by the opportunity to continue as the head men's basketball coach at Manhattan College," Masiello said in a statement. "I made a mistake that could have cost me my job at an institution I love. Details matter."

Masiello will be on unpaid leave until he obtains his degree from Kentucky. Below, Masiello's USF contract, which included language that specifically voided it upon a background check revealing his true educational history.

Here's The Contract Steve Masiello Signed With USF

In case you were wondering, here is the contract current former suspended Manhattan College basketball coach Steve Masiello signed with South Florida before it found out he never graduated college. As is often the case, the devil is in the details.

The contract, a five-year deal worth over $1 million annually before bonuses, was signed by both parties and set to kick in tomorrow, April 1. That is, unless USF found out within 30 days of signing that any part of his résumé and educational credentials in his online bio were misrepresented. (Article 10, on page 4 in the contract below.) Whoever added that clause deserves a raise.
