Wily Mo Peña has been playing in Japan since 2011 and represented the Orix Buffaloes for the Pacific League in this year's All-Star Game, played Saturday at Koshien Stadium. Peña smoked the first pitch he saw from Hanshin Tigers 20-year-old pitcher Shintaro Fujinami and damn near hit it out of the stadium.
Peña has been on a bit of a crushing home run streak. Earlier this year, he hit another monster shot, estimated at 492 feet against the Chiba Lotte Marines. It hit the top of the Kyocera Dome so it was unclear at first if it was actually a home run, but the umpires eventually ruled it was.
This most recent blast looked like it landed somewhere around the tunnel entry in Koshien's left field, which is just a few rows from the top of the stadium. It was a shot. About one minute into the video, you can see Fujinami's face as soon as Peña made contact and it's pretty great. He knew immediately and continued his incredulous laughing as Peña rounded the bases. No word on if he grooved him one, though.
