Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall has been suspended for one game—tomorrow’s Game 7 against the Lightning—for his hit on Nikita Kucherov. The Department of Player Safety’s video explanation is above.

I’m kind of shocked! Not that Kronwall made a dangerous hit in which he left his feet to take out a player with his head down—he’s been doing that for nearly a decade. I am surprised that the first career suspension for Kronwall was handed down for a Game 7, almost as if the NHL is going out of its way to pretend it doesn’t police the playoffs differently.
