Peyton Manning On Ole Miss Coaching Job Rumors: "Tell Them I'm 0-10 As An Assistant For Indianapolis”
Ole Miss fired head football coach Houston Nutt last week in the midst of his fourth season with the Rebels. He'll finish out the year in Oxford—his 2-8 squad hosts LSU this Saturday—but the search for his replacement is underway. And just a week in, it's already been suggested that Mississippi hire Peyton Manning, who's been on the sideline for Indy's 0-10 season as he recovers from neck surgery.
The patriarch of the Manning clan, Archie, is co-chairman of the selection committee for his (and Eli's) alma mater. Dad told the Memphis that he's heard from 20-25 people asking if his second son is interested in the job:
"I've gotten about 20 or 25 e-mails from people in that regard," said the elder Manning, who was in town Monday night to speak to the Touchdown Club of Memphis. "I passed that on to Peyton. He said, 'Just tell them that I'm 0-10 as an assistant for Indianapolis.'"
For any human without the Manning surname, that might be enough to take him out of consideration. Alas, Rebel fans, Peyton simply "passed on names of several viable candidates." The search continues.
