Bo Naylor had three hits, Andres Gimenez had two and Kole Calhoun hit his first home run as a member of the Guardians, who have dropped three of four overall.

With a runner at first and two out in the first inning, Torkelson fell behind 0-2, but worked a 10-pitch walk. Carpenter then lined a one-strike changeup just over the fence in right field for his 17th of the season and a 3-0 lead.

Calhoun went deep with two outs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Calhoun, 35, was playing in his 12th game with Cleveland since he was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 4.

The Guardians' Gabriel Arias led off the fifth with a single and scored when Naylor doubled off the wall in center. Arias was initially held at third, but he was sent home when the Tigers were unable to complete a clean relay, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Naylor also took third on the error, but the Guardians were unable to bring him home.

Baez got the run back when he led off the seventh with an opposite-field home run to right-center stretch the lead to 4-2.

Will Vest replaced Manning to start the seventh, and the Guardians strung together three hits, a one-out double by Naylor and singles from Myles Straw and Steven Kwan to cut the lead to 4-3. However, Alex Lange replaced Vest and stranded the bases loaded.
