The New York Yankees, one of the quieter teams at this year's trade deadline, acquired right-handed pitcher Keynan Middleton from the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday

The Yankees sent minor league right-hander Juan Carela to Chicago in return

Middleton, 29, will pitch for his fifth team in four seasons. After starting his career with the Los Angeles Angels (2017-20), he spent one year apiece with the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks before joining the White Sox

Middleton has a 2-2 record and a 3.96 ERA in 39 appearances for Chicago this season. He has two saves in four opportunities and struck out 47 batters in 36 1/3 innings

For his career, Middleton is 10-8 with a 4.00 ERA and 15 saves in 22 opportunities across 193 appearances (192 out of the bullpen)

Carela, 21, was 2-4 with a 3.67 ERA over 17 games (16 starts) for High-A Hudson Valley this season. He struck out 109 batters in 83 1/3 innings

New York made a second trade that was announced after the 6 p.m. ET deadline, acquiring right-hander Spencer Howard from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations

Howard, 27, struggled in three relief appearances this season, giving up four runs over 3 1/3 innings with three walks and two strikeouts. In four major league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2020-21) and Rangers (2021-23), Howard is 3-11 with a 7.20 ERA across 38 games (29 starts)

The Yankees started the day four games above .500 but in last place in the highly competitive American League East. They had been linked to St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson, among other players, but had not made a trade until the Middleton and Howard deals in the final hour before the deadline
