On First Pitches As A Cub, Henry Rodriguez Hit Ump And Carlos Beltran
The Washington Nationals recently traded Henry Rodriguez to the Cubs because he was not developing in the way they thought he would. Specifically, he struggled with control issues. His trade value was limited due to "bouts of wildness." He had a power arm, but often had no idea where his pitches would wind up. "He flashed otherworldly stuff but often followed up with pitches to the backstops and walks."
The Nationals finally gave up and shipped him up to Chicago one week ago. Rodriguez was added to the 25-man active roster on Friday but only made his first appearance for the Cubs tonight. Care to guess what the first words out of the booth were?
"Got that good lively arm—control has been a big problem for him throughout his career."
He immediately made good on that scouting report with a 99-mph fastball to the ump's shin and then hit Carlos Beltran on the very next pitch.
