The Canadian arm of Curaçao-based online casino operator Stake.com has been granted a full license to enter the competitive regulated gambling market of Alberta and could go live as soon as Monday.

Stake Canada Limited received the license from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) regulator on Tuesday and is now planning on offering a wide range of digital and real-time casino entertainment to punters in ‘The Energy Province’ including online slots as well as live-dealer games and a sportsbook from October 12.

There remains work to do

The firm disclosed it will launch real-money operations in Alberta via the domain at Stake.ca only after inking an agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), which is the body put in charge of managing the commercial operations of the western province’s regulated multi-operator online gambling market.

Should this come to pass, Alberta would join jurisdictions including Italy, Denmark, and Argentina alongside Colombia, Peru, and Mexico where Stake.com offers real-money online gambling services.

Standing out from the crowd

Stake Canada Limited Country Manager Kris Abbott said his company has built one of the planet’s most recognizable online gambling brands by doing things differently and intends to bring this same mindset to Alberta. He also asserted the coming platform is to be fully compliant with the AGLC’s standards and come complete with an array of player protection and responsible gambling features.

Abbott described the imminent launch as an ‘exciting milestone’ while extolling his enterprise’s long-term dedication to preparation, accountability, and compliance measures that ‘raise the bar’.

“Securing licensing in Alberta provides a strong foundation for the company’s development in Canada and reflects the importance we place on meeting local standards and player safety,” said Abbott.

A market teeming with competition

Alberta launched its regulated commercial online gambling market on July 13 featuring a field of 22 domains from operators such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM. This club has since grown to encompass 55 sites including Golden Nugget Casino, PartyCasino, and Golden Nugget Casino although the government-run Play Alberta platform remains as the most popular.

All of these are expected to see Alberta generate approximately $595 million in gross gaming revenues for the twelve months to the end of next March, and would see the province take in some $52 million in tax.

Ontario license application remains pending

Established in 2017, Stake.com moreover has a similar license application pending before the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and is hoping to enter Canada’s most populous province soon.

Abbott disclosed his company had initially planned to launch into Ontario via a third-party but later changed its mind so as to focus on utilizing its own technology. He declared this pivot had lengthened the application process but he remains confident of hearing back from the AGCO ‘at some point soon’.
