The coalition representing some of Canada’s largest crown lottery corporations has rebranded as the Canadian Alliance for Regulated Gaming (CARG) as it looks to grow its membership across the wider legal gambling sector.

Established in 2002 as the Canadian Lottery Coalition, CARG asserted the move will see it transform into a national not-for-profit industry association that is better able to reflect the country’s rapidly changing gaming landscape. The Moncton-headquartered organization revealed the name-change is to also allow it to more effectively promote a safer regulated gambling market via the advancement of various player health, consumer protection and evidence-based gaming policies.

Concerted collaboration between multiple industry voices

CARG Executive Director Molly Cormier stated the new-look organization now intends to work closely with industry stakeholders, governments, regulators, and communities to advance public-interest policies as Canada’s gambling markets evolve.

“The Association was created in recognition of the increasingly complex and national nature of many industry-related issues and the importance of ensuring there is a strong unified voice representing legal and regulated gaming organizations,” said Cormier.

Cooperation all the more important as propagation continues

CARG said coordinated action across Canadian jurisdictions has become all the more important as the proliferation of advertising and grey market online gambling operators has created new challenges for policymakers. It disclosed evolving technologies and emerging products such as prediction markets has additionally increased the risks to consumers.

“Canada’s gambling landscape is changing at an unprecedented pace while illegal and unregulated operators create growing risks for consumers and communities,” said Cormier.

Cormier proclaimed the safety of players must be at the center of how the industry responds to such a changing landscape and that CARG will endeavor to bring together regulators, governments, and industry leaders to help ensure the interests of the public drive the future of gambling policy in Canada.

Increased outreach for better cooperation and dialogue

CARG’s membership already includes the publicly-owned Loto-Québec, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation, and British Columbia Lottery Corporation and it now hopes to welcome additional voices from across Canada’s legal and regulated gaming ecosystem so as to foster collaboration and informed dialogue while remaining committed to the interests of the wider public.

The organization has launched a new website at www.CARG-AJCR.ca to aid this effort and provide policymakers, stakeholders, the media, and members of the public with access to information about its mandate, policy positions, and ongoing work.
