NorthStar Gaming has recently named Corey Goodman as permanent CEO after he held the position on an interim basis for the past eight months. The company currently operates NorthStar Bets, which is an online sportsbook and casino that is available in Ontario.
While the move shows renewed stability for the company, it’s still in a period of transition as it attempts to navigate a competitive Ontario market. It remains to be seen if they will eventually expand to Alberta, which opened its doors to regulated sports betting on July 13th, 2026.
In a public statement, Dean MacDonald, Chair of the Board, stated that Corey Goodman “has brought focus and discipline to the Company at a pivotal time, and the Board has full confidence in his leadership as NorthStar completes its outstanding financial reporting and continues to strengthen the business.”
As cited in the NorthStar Q3 2025 earnings report, the company had over $13 million in net losses for that year, with concerns that “cash flow and liquidity position may not be sufficient to fund operating expenditures, including marketing investments.”
While they haven’t had an updated earnings call, the move to promote Goodman signals renewed stability within the company.
There are now 50 operators in Ontario, with Fanatics as the newest platform planning to enter the market. As a smaller platform, NorthStar Bets faces the challenge of navigating such a competitive market that already has industry leaders like FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365, and much more.
As a Canadian company, NorthStar Bets tries to prioritize local sports teams as a way of differentiating from industry giants like FanDuel and DraftKings. NorthStar Bets also has its own integrated sports betting content within its platform, providing analysis, statistics, and other pertinent data. With its content produced by local writers, this adds another element not available elsewhere.
It remains to be seen what’s next for NorthStar Bets with Goodman as permanent CEO, but there are definitely questions, specifically whether or not the platform will go live in Alberta.
Even though the move to promote Corey Goodman to permanent CEO signals renewed stability for NorthStar Bets, it’s likely that a potential Alberta launch could be delayed. Previous CEO Michael Moskowitz had mentioned the company’s interest in expanding to Alberta in a Q2 2025 earnings call, so there’s a chance that it can eventually happen.
But given that the company is still in a transition period, that will likely have to wait, especially since Alberta has become a competitive market as well. While not quite as robust as Ontario, there are still nearly 30 operators available within the province after Bally Bet recently launched.
