Calling It Early: "Trap Queen" Is The Song Of The Summer
Listen, I know it's April. But I'm gonna go ahead and call it: New Jersey rapper Fetty Wap's "Trap Queen" is the Song Of The Summer.
I know it's not a new song. It's been around since the end of last summer. But momentum keeps building, and according to Google Trends, which don't lie, it's setting up nicely to blow the hell up come Memorial Day:
So it dropped off a bit at the end of last month, but "Trap Queen" is here, and it's gaining steam. Get on this train. Last year, the non-Iggy Azalea Song Of The Summer was Bobby Shmurda's "Hot N***a," which was pretty hard to beat because it was basically everywhere (so was "Fancy, but that's neither here nor there) and it had a corresponding dance. But this summer, it's "Trap Queen." It just is. I'm like, hey, what's up, hello is already a really solid greeting, but put music on it and, man, here we go. It feels like summer. If only the weather would shape up.
There are also a few other possibilities for Song Of The Summer, of course. It could be the new Carly Rae Jepsen song, "I Really Like You," which is pretty summery and, c'mon, inherently pop, which gives it an extreme advantage in this race.
I really really really really really like you—dammit, it's already in my head.
There's a third early front-runner, too, in Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money." Based off her iHeartRadio performance Sunday night, money-green fur coats will also be HUGE this summer.
Oh, but there is a solid chance Rihanna will drop something else worthy of Song of the Summer consideration between now and the solstice. It could happen. Or Kanye could swoop in. So could any number of folks who have promised albums made of steel and forged in fire. It's already been a bonkers year for new music. But Fetty Wap has the early edge, and may well deliver our official song of the warmer months. Or it will just be Iggy Azalea again. Who knows!?
