Coach Fired For Playing In High School Girls' Soccer Matches
High school coaches: Even if you get that itch to relive your athletic career and make one more comeback, don't do it, because you'll probably be canned.
Juany Gonzalez was fired after the school discovered that she had played in the final regular-season matches against Lemon Bay (Fla.) for the DeSoto County High (Fla.) high school girls' varsity and junior-varsity soccer teams on Jan. 10. (The varsity team won, 2-1.) Gonzalez had served as an assistant coach, and graduated from the school in 2009.
The unorthodox cap came to light after some players told Tracy Hay, the boys' varsity soccer coach, who told athletic director Jarrett Zolkos, who told DeSoto County district superintendent Karyn Gray. Head coach Narce Hinojos was fired, along with Gonzalez.
The school was fined $1,000 and given one year of administrative probation by the Florida High School Athletic Association. DeSoto County also had to forfeit the victory, like it mattered for their 9-15 record.
